The treaty was in force since the summer of 1988 and banned the production and testing of ground-based ballistic and cruise missiles with a range of 500 to 5500 km. In August 2019, Trump withdrew from the agreement, because. considered that the deployment of 9M729 missiles by Russia violated the terms of the treaty.

On January 25, the DPRK conducted a test launch of long-range cruise missiles.
Launched 2 cruise missiles, having flown 9137 seconds along a given trajectory over the East Korean (Japanese) Sea, hit the island target at a distance of about 1800 kilometers.
A day later, on January 27, the National Defense Academy conducted a test launch of tactical guided surface-to-surface missiles. Both missiles reportedly hit the island target with high accuracy.

North Korea is developing technology that can defeat the costly and complex missile defence systems that 🇺🇸#USA and 🇯🇵#Japan have been deploying across this region.
"It seems pretty clear that their aim is to develop weapons that can evade and complicate missile defences that are highly manoeuvrable and harder for the United States to pre-empt, let alone to detect," says Duyeon Kim at the Centre for a New American Century.
"They want to have a deterrence system that is like a scorpion's tail."
"Kim Jong-un feels chronically insecure. He doesn't trust anybody, including 🇨🇳#China and 🇷🇺#Russia, and so might feel the need to build up his capability beyond what we might consider sufficient."
However, Professor Brian R Myers at Dongseo University in the South Korean city of Busan says Pyongyang has a much more ambitious goal: North Korea's hope is to use its arsenal as leverage to negotiate a peace treaty with 🇰🇷#South_Korea and a US withdrawal from the Korean peninsula.
The North believes, after that, it will be free to subjugate the South.
