1. Praggnanandhaa Wins Grand Chess Tour Title

WHAT HAPPENED
R. Praggnanandhaa defeated Fabiano Caruana 15–13 in the Grand Chess Tour final in St Louis, becoming the first Indian to win the Grand Chess Tour title.

CORE ISSUE
India’s rising dominance in elite chess and Praggnanandhaa’s emergence as a leading global player.

KEY DETAILS
- Historic first: Praggnanandhaa became the first Indian to win the prestigious Grand Chess Tour, which combines Classical, Rapid and Blitz formats.
- Comeback: He overturned a 3–9 deficit against Caruana before winning the final 15–13.
- Indian chess strength: The article highlights the growing presence of Indian players, including D. Gukesh, R. Praggnanandhaa and R. Vaishali, at the highest level.
- Road to 2026: Praggnanandhaa had missed qualification for the 2026 Candidates but responded strongly, including defeating Magnus Carlsen twice in the same event.

WHY IT MATTERS
Reflects India’s growing prominence in global chess, with young Indian players increasingly challenging established international champions.

UPSC Relevance: Sports diplomacy, India’s soft power, youth development and global achievements.

2. FCNR(B) Deposits Push Forex Reserves to Record High

WHAT HAPPENED
India’s foreign exchange reserves rose to an all-time high of $729.33 billion in August, helped by strong inflows into FCNR(B) deposits.

CORE ISSUE
Higher forex reserves strengthen the RBI’s ability to defend the rupee against external shocks and capital outflows.

KEY DETAILS
- FCNR(B) window: RBI’s concessional swap facility encouraged NRIs to bring foreign-currency deposits into Indian banks; the scheme has been operational since June 8.
- Record reserves: Forex reserves increased to $729.33 billion, surpassing the previous high of $728.49 billion.
- Rupee support: Stronger reserves provide greater capacity to manage rupee volatility and external financing pressures.
- External resilience: Higher reserves improve India’s ability to withstand shocks such as oil-price spikes, capital outflows and global interest-rate changes.

WHY IT MATTERS
A strong reserve position acts as a buffer against external-sector shocks, supporting financial stability and confidence in the Indian economy.
