1. Nepal Flash Floods: Hundreds Missing, Indian Nationals Affected
WHAT HAPPENED
Flash floods in Nepal’s Rasuwa district killed over 150 people, with hundreds still missing, including more than 100 Indians.
CORE ISSUE
Extreme rainfall and ice-rock avalanches triggered sudden flooding, highlighting the vulnerability of Himalayan regions to cascading disasters.
KEY DETAILS
Indian nationals affected: Over 100 Indians were among those reported missing; many were travelling towards Kailash Mansarovar.
Multiple districts hit: At least five districts were affected, including Rasuwa, where flash floods damaged settlements and infrastructure.
Possible trigger: Scientists suggested an ice-rock avalanche may have triggered a surge in the border river, though assessment was preliminary.

1. Salmonella Infections: Beyond Typhoid & Diarrhoea
WHAT HAPPENED
Experts highlight that Salmonella infections are broader than typhoid, with non-typhoidal Salmonella often causing undiagnosed gastroenteritis and sometimes severe bloodstream infections.
CORE ISSUE
India needs stronger surveillance and a One Health approach to address Salmonella transmission and rising antimicrobial resistance.
KEY DETAILS
Two major groups: S. Typhi and S. Paratyphi cause typhoid/paratyphoid, while non-typhoidal Salmonella (NTS) commonly causes gastroenteritis.
Transmission: NTS has a wider animal–environment–human cycle; poultry, eggs, meat and other animal-derived foods can act as sources.
AMR threat: Drug-resistant Salmonella is increasing; resistance to fluoroquinolones in S. Typhi reached 85% in 2015–19 in the cited study.
Way forward: Strengthen food safety, sanitation, surveillance and antimicrobial stewardship; use blood culture for suspected typhoid rather than relying solely on the Widal test.
