1. India's Paddy Fields Among World's Largest Methane Emitters

WHAT HAPPENED
A study found that India's paddy fields are among the world's largest sources of methane emissions, with emissions rising due to changes in cultivation practices.

CORE ISSUE
Reducing methane emissions from rice cultivation while ensuring food security and sustainable agriculture.

KEY DETAILS
β€’ India is the world's largest rice producer, and paddy cultivation is a major source of methane (CHβ‚„) emissions.
β€’ Expansion of continuous irrigation, crop residue incorporation and increased nitrogen fertiliser use have raised emissions.
β€’ Practices such as Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD), better residue management and low-emission rice varieties can reduce methane.
β€’ Methane is a short-lived but highly potent greenhouse gas, making its reduction crucial for climate mitigation.

WHY IT MATTERS
Reducing methane emissions from agriculture supports India's climate commitments while promoting sustainable rice production and long-term food security.
