1. Frozen embryo donation rules – legal challenge

What happened
• Delhi High Court issued notice on a PIL challenging provisions of the Assisted Reproductive Technology (Regulation) Act, 2021.
• Petition questions mandatory destruction/research donation of surplus frozen embryos.

Issue raised
• Ban on donating frozen embryos for reproductive use by another infertile couple.
• Differential treatment between fresh donor embryos (allowed) and frozen embryos (barred).

Current context
• Law allows embryo creation using donor sperm/eggs.
• Frozen embryos can be stored up to 10 years; thereafter must perish or be donated to research.
• Challenge invoked under Articles 14 and 21.
