1. Rivers increase Everest's length
β’ Mt. Everest has risen 15-50 m due to erosion from the Arun River over 89,000 years
β’ Everest is 8,849 m, growing about 2 mm annually
β’ Arun River's erosion reduces crust weight, causing isostatic rebound, contributing ~10% to Everest's uplift rate
β’ Isostatic rebound: Occurs when surface weight decreases, allowing land to riseβlike a boat rising as cargo is unloaded
β’ River merger effect: Merging of the Arun and Kosi rivers increased erosion and sediment transport, enhancing the gorge and boosting Everest's height
β’ Some geologists doubt the study's conclusions, citing uncertainties in river dating and geological assumptions
1. 10 yrs of SBM
β’ Launched by PM Modi in 2014, aims for a "Clean India" as tribute to Gandhi
β’ Divisions: SBM-Gramin for rural areas; SBM-Urban for cities, managed by respective ministries
β’ Focus Areas: Individual/community toilets, solid waste mgmt, awareness campaigns
β’ Main Goal: Achieve ODF status by Oct 2, 2019; ODF = no open defecation at any time
β’ Achievements: 10 crore toilets built; 6 lakh villages declared ODF by 2019
β’ Funding: Increased from βΉ10,000 to βΉ12,000 per toilet; βΉ57,469.22 crore released for SBM-G
β’ SBM 2.0: Launched in 2021; focuses on garbage-free cities and waste management
β’ Impact: Estimated 3 lakh diarrheal deaths averted; reduction in infant mortality linked to SBM
β’ Current Status: Census 2021 results pending; 53.1% lacked latrines in 2011
