INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPT
Interview Date – 30 Jan 2025
Board – Shri Sheel Vardhan Singh
Forenoon session, 2nd to go. Nearly 45min.
DAF Keywords – Chemical Engineering, Research Internship, Indian Hip Hop Music, Karate, Perspective-taking visualization, Cargill Global Scholars Program, Sociology.
Chairman
1. Reads the DAF – You are {Name}, come from {place}. I see that you have mentioned that you follow Indian Hip Hop music, what is it?
2. From your answer, I see it is more like fusion music rather than a distinct genre of music.
3. What is the origin of Hip Hop music?
a. Rooted in protest movement of Afro-Americans during 70s in USA.
4. (Building upon my answer) So Hip hop music has this protest element, but Indian Hip hop music lacks this, so how is IHH a category of music?
a. Gave some examples of tracks that have this element of protest.
5. What you’re telling is rap music like Tupac Shakur in the west coast etc., is rap same as hip hop?
6. What do you know about Hindustani music and Carnatic music?
7. (Interrupts my answer) What is the textual source from which they are derived?
a. I said sorry sir I’m not aware. Sir said - you know so much about hip hop and western music, you should be aware about our own music as well.
8. Our discussion on fusion reminds me of a new genre that is gaining a lot of popularity – Historical fiction. What is your opinion on it?
9. So according to you it is rooted in history but is essentially fiction?
10. But I think it is distorting history. When people like Amish write about the people of Meluha, most readers don’t distinguish history from fiction.
a. Helps in creating awareness.
b. Leads to curiosity about history, people can read more about true history based on their interest.
11. As per this logic, if there is crime in society, it would create awareness about it amongst people. So, crime is also good for society?
a. Answered as per normal and pathological social facts of Durkheim and impact on collective conscience.
12. So, you have used the Collectivism theory from sociology. What good is this shock to collective conscience? We have seen that in past there have been incidents that have created ripples in society, but the situation remains same and nothing has changed.
a. I began answering that it depends on the type of crime and the severity.
b. (Interrupted in between) I’ll narrow it down for you, let’s talk about crime against women.
13. I see in your DAF that you’ve accomplished a lot in research domain. You did {read out the details and achievements}. It seems you were on course to do your PhD, become a professor, do brilliant research and bring in a Nobel Prize for our nation (says this playfully). Why this sudden 180-degree switch to Civil Services?
Member-1
1. What belt are you in Karate?
2. Which style of Karate do you practice?
a. Shito Ryu
3. Is it related to Shoto-kan? What is the difference between both?
4. After learning Karate, do you feel like beating people around? Or getting into fights?
5. So did you not get the opportunity to get into fights or you don’t like it? (with a slight laugh)
6. Assume that you get into a fight with a random person on the street. He won’t follow the rules that you are taught in Karate like hit above the belt etc. So how would you fight with him?
a. I mentioned that we are aware of basics of street fighting if someone uses sticks etc. Chairman sir adds that if the person has a gun, then the entire situation changes.
b. After my answer member says I thought that like my students in exam you would say that this is out of syllabus (starts laughing). He said that I asked these questions to ease you into the interview, now let’s get to serious questions.
7. You have done Chemical Engineering? There is another discipline called Chemical Technology for graduation. What is the difference between both?
8. (Probably was not completely satisfied with my previous answer) Can you think of what is the relation between Engineering and Technology?

Sanjay Verma sir
Mainly Daf based - Public speaking, divyangjan marriage program, street play, Mechanical engineering,PSIR , Jabalpur
Chairman
Where did you perform the street play?
Tell me about any contemporary prominent street player of recent times.
Have you done any course on public speaking?
You said "opportunity." What kind of opportunities?
Tell me five top public speakers of recent times.
M-1 (Lady)
You received an award for the Divyangjan marriage program. Tell me about it.
What was its role?
What were your learnings?
If you needed to organize a big event, what steps would you follow?
If you had to choose between Israel and Palestine, whom would you choose? Or if you had to prioritize one over the other?
What are the reasons for choosing Israel?
M-2
Should we diplomatically pressure Israel to recognize Palestine's rights?
I see NGO work in your profile. We are already seeing reduced funding for NGOs, including curbs on USAID. What should happen?
What do you think the government should fund?
If development is the government's responsibility, then why do we need NGOs?
You studied mechanical engineering and then moved to PSIR. Which subject do you like the most?
Why?
Then why did you choose mechanical engineering? Which subject did you like the most?
What is the current status of electric vehicles in India?
M-3 (Lady)
You lived in Jabalpur. There is a government vehicle factory there. What is it about?
What is manufactured there?
Why didn’t you join after college?
Have you ever been inside the factory?
When I traveled from Delhi to Jabalpur, no one attended to me for selling tea or water bottles compared to other routes. Why is that?
If you were the DM of Jabalpur and had to bring transparency to decision-making, what would you do?
Suppose a local MLA is protesting in your office for illegitimate reasons and staging a dharna. What would you do?
M-4
What is power?
What is the relationship between politics and power?
Can politics exist without power?
Who said, "Knowledge is power"?
Do you know an example where Foucault mentions a mother exercising power?
What is the difference between a public speaker and a public intellectual?
Can a public speaker also be an intellectual?
Chairman (Final Questions)
In the Divyangjan marriage program where you participated, did you ensure pre-marriage counseling?
How many love marriages and romantic marriages were there?

1 Board Member was asking deep questions. ("You can't say no idea to the question of 'What's the specific demand/issue/roadblock in negotiations ', You've PSIR background, You should know the details)
Lots of Cross Questions
Last year I had the same chairman but now with a totally different experience.
Last year too many scenario related Questions, Only 2 Questions on IR. This year's lot of IR Q, only 2 Situation based Q.
Mocks - Only IAS (Online 1-1), Chanakya Mandal (Offline 1-1), Samkalp (Offline Panel)
Relevance of Mocks - Good
Helped me to make my answers crisp
More than mocks, Casual Interactions and Discussion with Friends, Family, Batchmates, Seniors, Mentors, Faculty, Social Media usage like Twitter Scrolling helped me for value addition and cross questions.

✅ One on One - Rahul Sir of IAS PCS PATHSHALA and Dharmadhikari Sir.
I deeply thank both of them especially rahul sir for his input on articulation of answer and explaining the nitty gritty of answering🙏
To sum up the experience i would say although it is called a personality test..you need to be well prepared for it. The panel will have 30 minutes to judge your personality and in the same way you will also have those 30 minutes to showcase the aspects of your personality that work in your favor.
✅ Important Note: Prepare your DAF very well. I went through many transcripts and noticed that no questions related to IRS or the budget were being asked. However Rahul Sir advised me to prepare them since they were part of my DAF and eventually questions from those areas did come up in my interview. So the bare minimum you can do is to prepare your DAF well...focus on what is in your control. Control the controllable.
Wishing Everyone all the best. ❤️

Scam Alert 🚨
Since there are many new aspirants also associated with this channel, we would like to address something. It has often been brought to our notice that some telegram channels are offering paid courses for UPSC and State PSC exams with forged marksheets and without proper credentials of the people launching those courses. Hence, it is a request to all the members of our community that they must verify the credentials multiple times with adequate proof and then only enrol for such courses. Ask the people running such courses to share their original marksheets or e-summon letters with their name. Always consult your trusted seniors or friends to verify the same. Do not become prey to this kind of phishing where your fears, emotions and hard earned money are being used to monetise scams.
Happy learning and all the best to everyone!
