β One of the oldest martial arts in India; also widely practiced by women.
β Practiced: most parts of southern India.
β Originated in the state of Kerala in the 4th century A. D.
β Legends: sage Parasurama started Kalarippayattu.
β Kalari: type of school/gymnasium/training hall
β Includes mock duels (armed and unarmed combat) and physical exercises.
β Not accompanied by any drumming or song.
β Important aspects: style of fighting (Footwork); fighting with Otta (an βSβ shaped stick), Puliyankam or sword fight, Verumkai or bare-handed fight, AngaThari or use of metal weapons.
