Forwarded from Ethics Target 150+ : UPSC GS-IV by Rao Sir
Q) What is meant by βenvironmental ethicsβ? Why is it important to study? Discuss any one environmental issue from the viewpoint of environmental ethics.
(150 words)
Ans) Environmental ethics, a branch of applied ethics, examines the relationship between humans and the environment. It focuses on values such as biodiversity and ecosystem health and addresses human attitudes, actions, and policies aimed at environmental protection and sustainability.
Studying environmental ethics is crucial because, according to utilitarian theorists like J.S. Bentham and J.S. Mill, the utility of human actions should benefit not only people but all living beings. This approach emphasizes assessing environmental impacts both qualitatively and quantitatively.
Changing Attitudes: Addressing climate change and resource depletion requires a shift in individual attitudes. Environmental ethics fosters this change by promoting a sense of responsibility towards nature.
Better Policies: Understanding environmental ethics aids in formulating and implementing eco-friendly policies, enhancing sustainability.
One pressing environmental issue is deforestation. Deforestation results in loss of biodiversity, disruption of ecosystems, and climate change. Measures taken include the implementation of reforestation projects, stricter logging regulations, and promoting sustainable forestry practices. For example, Indiaβs National Afforestation Programme aims to restore degraded forests and improve ecological balance, reflecting the application of environmental ethics in policy-making.
Further every individual needs to perform their duty towards the environment for mutual co-existence.
Note: We encourage individuals to take hints from the structure, write with their own creativity, get it evaluated from us and not to just follow or rely on the model answer.
