22-year-old Malone Lam has pleaded guilty in a case involving one of the largest cryptocurrency heists in U.S. history. According to investigators, he recruited members of the group through online games; the group would then assign roles and target wealthy cryptocurrency holders.
One of the victims was an investor from Washington; the perpetrators posed as employees of Google and Gemini to trick the victim into revealing their wallet access credentials.
The stolen funds were spent in an ostentatious manner—on supercars, private jets, mansions, and parties. On a single night at a Los Angeles club, the group spent over $569,000.
Lam now faces up to 20 years in prison.
