🐳 Reality check for VC valuations

🐃 During bull markets, venture investors often push crypto project valuations higher on hype and momentum. But when the market cools, these projects face a harsh reality check: public market caps fall far below their earlier private valuations. 👀

📉 The recent downturn clearly exposed the growing gap between VC estimates and real market prices. As liquidity dries up and speculation fades, only projects with real traction and sustainable economics manage to hold value — the rest are repriced by the market.
Tether expands its Bitcoin reserves

Tether acquired 8,888 BTC in the fourth quarter of 2025, strengthening its Bitcoin holdings.

The company’s total reserves exceeded 96,000 BTC, valued at around $8.4 billion, according to Arkham Intelligence.

The purchases align with Tether’s strategy to allocate up to 15% of its profits to Bitcoin as a long-term asset.
Bloomberg: Bitcoin ETFs could see massive inflows in 2026

🔎 Bloomberg analyst Eric Balchunas expects $50–70B to flow into spot Bitcoin ETFs in 2026 if BTC rises to the $130k–140k range.

The momentum is already visible: in the first two trading days of the year, net inflows reached $1.2B, which annualizes to roughly $150B.

Even under a weak market scenario, ETF inflows could still hit around $22B. If macro conditions improve, demand for Bitcoin ETFs may accelerate significantly — reinforcing their role as a major gateway for institutional capital into BTC.
Reality of Bitcoin Mining Today

A miner shared his current results: running 27 ASIC devices, his monthly revenue is about $4,800 (~0.053 BTC). After electricity and hosting costs, net profit is just over $1,000.

Over 3.5 years, mining delivered returns comparable to simply buying BTC outright. Despite this, he sticks to a mine & hold strategy rather than selling.

His long-term bet is on higher transaction fees and a rise in ASIC hardware prices during the next bull market, which could significantly improve overall profitability.
📊 Bitcoin Sentiment vs Price Action

Despite BTC’s recent price growth, discussions on social media are becoming increasingly pessimistic, according to data from Santiment. Retail sentiment is shifting toward negativity even as the market moves higher.

Historically, crypto markets often move against the mood of retail investors. Because of this, the current surge in negative sentiment could act as a contrarian signal, potentially pushing Bitcoin back above $100,000 for the first time since November 13.

❄️ Winter Storm Hits Bitcoin Mining in the U.S.

A severe winter storm in the U.S. knocked out ~200 EH/s of mining power, sending Bitcoin’s hashrate down to 706 EH/s, the lowest in six months. Block times briefly stretched to ~12 minutes.

American miners were hit hardest: Foundry USA’s pool saw a ~60% drop in hashrate due to electricity restrictions.

The network remains secure, but this highlights how weather and power limits can temporarily disrupt mining operations.

⚡️ Paxos urges banks to embrace stablecoins

Paxos says new regulations in the U.S., EU and Singapore are creating major opportunities for banks in the stablecoin market.

The company notes that leading issuers, including Tether and Circle, manage more than $100 billion in circulating tokens, with annual transaction volumes reaching into the trillions of dollars.

Paxos argues that clear regulation reduces risks and enables banks to generate revenue from issuing, custodying and settling stablecoins.
Canaan expands its presence in the U.S.

Canaan Inc. has acquired a 49% stake from Cipher Mining in a joint venture that includes three operational mining projects in Texas.

The projects have a total power capacity of 120 MW and deliver a combined hashrate of around 4.4 EH/s.

🦄 New York Court Dismisses Lawsuit Against Uniswap

🍏 A New York court has dismissed a class-action lawsuit against Uniswap, where plaintiffs tried to hold the platform responsible for scam tokens launched by third parties.

⚖️ The court ruled that the protocol itself is not liable for the quality, legitimacy, or intent of projects built on top of it. In other words, Uniswap provides infrastructure — not financial guarantees.

The case lasted four years, and the final decision is being seen as a major legal precedent for the crypto industry, reinforcing the idea that decentralized protocols are tools, not issuers.

👏 A win not just for Uniswap, but for DeFi as a whole.

Short squeeze or fake breakout?

For the first time in a while, short positions are getting wiped out more than longs.

In the past 24 hours:

• $330M in shorts liquidated
• $168M in longs liquidated

This happened as Bitcoin spiked above $76K, before pulling back to around $74K.

The shift suggests a short squeeze, where bearish traders are forced to close positions, fueling upward momentum.

Since the start of the month, the market has shown a clear upward trend — but the quick pullback raises questions.

So what is it:

📈 the start of a real breakout
or just another trap before the next move?
🚨 DeFi exploit hits stablecoin ecosystem

Ethereum-based stablecoin USR from Resolve Labs suffered a major hack, briefly depegging from $1 and exposing critical security flaws in DeFi.

An attacker reportedly deposited just ~$200K in USD Coin, exploiting a minting vulnerability to generate up to 80M USR. The bug likely involved broken validation logic or compromised signing keys, allowing massive “unsecured” token issuance.

The attacker quickly swapped funds across DeFi platforms like Curve Finance, triggering a liquidity collapse. Within 17 minutes, USR crashed to ~$0.025 before partially recovering. 📉

Estimated profit: $25M+, withdrawn in stablecoins and Ethereum.

Despite multiple audits, the exploit highlights a recurring issue: audits ≠ security. Experts point to weak key management and flawed minting logic as root causes.
