How Decentralized is DeFi? A Framework for Classifying Lending Protocols
DeFi has become some kind of buzz word in crypto lately. We see opinion leaders mentioning DeFi progress almost in every tweet. But, it appears that decentralization of decentralized finance can be of different levels.
Here are our highlights on a cool article by Kyle J Kistner:
All DeFi lending protocols have common components: custody, price feeds, initiation of margin calls, provision of margin call liquidity, interest rate determination, and protocol development. The decentralization of these 6 components determines the degree of the protocol decentralization according to the article.
The author points out 7 degrees of DeFi decentralization, (features of each degree can be seen in the picture):
▪️CeFi (centralised finance): SALT, BlockFi, Nexo, and Celsius
▪️Degree 1 DeFi: Dharma v 1.0
▪️Degree 2 DeFi: Expo, Nuo, and ETHLend
▪️Degree 3 DeFi: Compound, MakerDAO
▪️Degree 4 DeFi: Fulcrum, Torque and dYdX
▪️Degree 5 DeFi: bZx
▪️Degree 6 DeFi: There is no completely decentralized DeFi protocol yet
Interestingly, of these projects only MakerDAO and bZx got a token model.
