Old stock market abuses, new rails. Dan Kessler on the people paid to catch them.

This year a memecoin cornered 53 percent of a stock token, one entity held about 92 percent of SIREN and USELESS traded 11 times its spot volume in perpetuals. Kraken's parent is adopting Nasdaq's surveillance technology, and regulated venues are hiring the analysts first.

Crypto recruiters get hired on numbers, like everyone they screen.

"42 engineering hires in 12 months" gets the interview. "People person" doesn't. Average pay is about $135,000 and the range tops out at $242,000, with no coding required. Bex Adeyemi did the job for seven years and explains how to get in: https://www.cryptojob.org/blog/crypto-recruiter-jobs

Prediction markets vs US sportsbooks

July volume: $50.6 billion, against about $14 billion a month at US sportsbooks
Kalshi's record week: $15.27 billion in contracts, $3.53 billion actually paid
Kalshi's headcount: about 120 people

Volume counts contracts at face value, so the dollars paid were about 23 percent of the contract figure. Still enormous. Karin Holm on the number that holds up: https://www.cryptojob.org/blog/prediction-market-volume-vs-sportsbooks

BitMEX invented the perpetual swap. It closed with about 0.08 percent of that market.

At its peak it held an estimated 57 percent of crypto derivatives. On September 23, after eleven years, it stopped trading. The product won and the company didn't. Dan Kessler on where the derivatives jobs went.

Crypto breaks in public, often at 3am, and someone has to write the first statement within the hour.

It says what happened, what users should do now and when the next update comes, with no guessing at causes or amounts. Exchange comms managers were listed at about $81,000 to $161,000 and heads of comms up to $250,000. Bex Adeyemi on how to get hired: https://www.cryptojob.org/blog/crypto-communications-jobs

HYPE set three record highs in a week. The bigger story is a regulated US door into Hyperliquid.

Payward, Kraken's parent, wants to route US traders to Hyperliquid's markets through Bitnomial and NinjaTrader Clearing, pending approval. A US exchange and clearinghouse supervising markets on a public chain would be new, and somebody has to staff it. Dan Kessler on the compliance plumbing.

Zcash rose about 2,496 percent in a year. The buyers arrived fast. The engineers didn't.

Very few people can safely change a shielded protocol or tell whether someone minted counterfeit coins inside one. That's why senior zero knowledge engineers reach $255K to $320K. Tiago Sousa on the stack and the pay: https://www.cryptojob.org/blog/zcash-privacy-engineer-jobs

If your exchange announces it's closing, do these four things first:

1. Withdraw your own funds
2. Download your contract and grant agreements
3. Don't sign the first release they hand you
4. Start your search the same day

Unvested tokens are usually gone, and vested ones are worth what the market pays after the news. Bex Adeyemi on jobs, tokens and severance: https://www.cryptojob.org/blog/exchange-shut-down-job-tokens-severance

Crypto venture funding reached $5.68 billion in Q2, up 31 percent.

78 percent of it went to later stage companies, and only five new funds closed, the fewest in a quarter since 2019. That means specialist hiring now, and fewer seed rounds and early stage employers in 2027 and 2028. Karin Holm ran the numbers: https://www.cryptojob.org/blog/crypto-venture-funding-q2-2026

BlackRock expects AI agents to drive the next wave of stablecoin demand. The payment data says not yet.

TRM Labs found that only 0.6 to 7.5 percent of filtered x402 payment value looks genuinely agentic today. Both can be right, because they describe different years. The rails are being built now, and so are the jobs: payment standards, wallets with spending controls and compliance for machine payments. Karin Holm has the numbers.
