Italian cheese producers have started adding edible microchips the size of a grain of sand to cheese heads to fight counterfeiting. The information contained on the chip can be read with a scanner to ensure the product is original.
The Italians claim that it is safe to eat the chip, as the data from the eaten chip is supposedly unreadable, so it will not be possible to trace the person who swallowed it.
Other industries are also planning to use similar chips, including manufacturers of medicines and car parts.
