The idea of the red O came about partly to reinforce
a design concept to use circular canopies, pumps, and
display elements for a distinctive and attractive look.
It also served to help people pronounce the name correctly (Mo-bil, not Mo-bile), and of course to add a
single memorable and distinctive element to an other wise very simple lettering style.

How to Combine Icons Like a Pro

The Firecraft Pizza Trick

The Firecraft Pizza logo is a Negative Space Combination Mark that uses dual imagery to fuse a flame and a pizza slice into a single, memorable symbol.

“A flame or a pizza slice on its own is forgettable. But when combined using negative space, they become memorable and unique.”
Here’s what he did for Firecraft Pizza:

Sketched dozens of flames
Sketched dozens of pizza slices
Looked for visual overlaps that could simplify two ideas into one
Used negative space to tell a story without clutter
🎯 Why it works:

It’s simple
It’s ownable (not generic)
It communicates what and how in a single glance

Concept First, Pretty Later
Ever noticed the arrow in the FedEx logo?
Hidden between the E and the x not with color, not with outlines, just clever spacing.

That’s conceptual design:
It’s not about decoration it’s about ideas.

The arrow represents speed, movement, direction everything the brand stands for. And here’s the best part:

You don’t see it immediately.
But when you do you smile.
That’s the “aha!” moment. That’s wit in design.

Why It Matters
Many new designers stress over making things look pretty perfect gradients, trendy fonts, cool mockups.
But beauty fades fast.

What lasts is a smart idea one that tells a story, sparks curiosity, or reveals itself with meaning.

Try This:
Next time you design, ask yourself:

Is there a hidden message I can include?”
Can this logo say something, not just show something?
What concept would make the client smile once they notice it?
Start with the idea, then style it later.
That’s how great design creates impact not just attention.

Just finished reading this gem, and I had to share.

This book isn’t about tools or design trends it’s about something deeper:
How to make people smile with your ideas.

It shows how the smartest designs are the ones that make you think, even for a second.
Not with loud visuals but with wit, simplicity, and clever twists.

You’ll see logos, posters, ads that say:

“አሃ እንደዛ ነው እንዴ”

How to play with visual puns
Use negative space in creative ways
Combine two ideas into one unforgettable design
Super inspiring if you’re stuck in the “make it pretty” loop.
This book will push you to make it smart instead.

🟠 What is Branding, really?

I’ve seen people use the word branding interchangeably with logo or identity design
Others say it’s the product.
Some say it’s the promise a company makes to its customers.

So now I’m curious 👀

What does branding mean to YOU?
Drop your thoughts below no wrong answers, just honest takes.

You designed the perfect logo…
Clean lines, cool font, mockups on point.
But nobody remembers your brand. Why?

Because a logo isn’t a brand.
It’s just the tip of the iceberg.

In Designing Brand Identity, they say:

“A brand is a promise, a reputation, an expectation.”
Your logo?
It’s the reminder. The trigger. The stamp.
But it only works when the experience behind it is real.
Think about Apple. Nike. Red Cross.
The logo works because the brand does.

So if you're obsessing over pixels before you clarify your promise you’re building backwards.

One of the OGs of modern graphic design.
The mind behind legendary logos like:

IBM
ABC
UPS
Westinghouse
But Rand didn’t just make logos he made ideas you could see.

He believed design wasn’t just decoration.

It’s about solving problems with meaning and style.
His famous rebus poster 👁️ + 🐝 + M wasn’t the IBM logo,
but a playful twist to make you remember the brand.
That’s wit. That’s concept. That’s a smile in the mind.

Here’s how I know a brand is working…
Even before I see the logo.

Story:
In the book, they say:

You should be able to cover up the logo and still recognize the brand.
That’s what look and feel does.
Typography, color, tone, rhythm all working together.
If you remove the logo, and it still feels like that brand
you nailed it.
Name the brands you Recognize in the comment Section

Design Red Flags You Should Avoid

We’ve all made some of these mistakes (especially early on). But if you want your designs to feel professional and intentional, avoid these red flags:

1. Too Many Fonts
Using 4 or more fonts = chaos.
✅ Stick to 1–2 (maybe 3 with purpose). Hierarchy > variety.

2. Center-Aligning Everything
Centering headlines, body, logo, icons? It kills structure.
✅ Use left or grid-based alignment for cleaner, more confident layouts.

3. No White Space
Cramming everything into every corner makes your design feel claustrophobic.
✅ Let your content breathe whitespace is a design tool.

4. Overusing Effects
Drop shadows, gradients, strokes, bevels all at once?
✅ If you need 4 effects to make text readable, rethink the design.

5. Ignoring Contrast
Light gray text on a white background? No one can read it.
✅ Use high contrast for readability and visual hierarchy.

6. Stretching Logos or Images
Please, never. Ever.
✅ Always scale proportionally (Shift + drag, friends).

7. Using Trendy Fonts Without Context
Not every project needs that cool futuristic or hand-drawn font.
✅ Choose fonts that fit the brand/message, not just your mood.
