We close the Ground season with an afternoon dedicated to attentive listening and multispecies connection. The day begins with a Sound Ecologies Walkshop hosted by Werner de Valk, featuring contributions from Matthias Hurtl with Listening to the Cracks and Nico García Peguinho with Sensing the Forest. Together they explore how sound can reveal the hidden life and shifting ecologies of our surroundings.
As daylight fades, Friso and Bart from Nightwalkers introduce a nocturnal perspective on urban sensing. Their long-running walking practice invites participants to experience the city after dark, where slower movement and shifting perception open up new ways of noticing urban atmospheres and multispecies encounters.
📍November 22 - 13:00 - 15:00
📅 CCU Studio, Vlampijpstraat 84
🎫Regular €7,50/Students €5, https://ccu.stager.co/shop/default/events/111593999

In the evening of the Ground Finissage, the multispecies concert carries the day’s themes into performance.
The concert begins with Niels Gräber and Isaac van den Aker, who create sound with and through the garden itself, followed by Sonified Garden by Sunjoo Lee and Korhan Erel. On a sunny August day, Korhan and Sunjoo took a deep listen to the Electric Garden’s vibrant soundscape. Inspired by its living energies, they created an audiovisual performance shaped by the garden’s fermenting ecosystem.
Nico García Peguinho presents Sensing the Alice Holt Forest, an audiovisual work based on the extensive aural dataset of the Sensing the Forest project.
The finissage offers a moment to reflect, listen and celebrate the closing of Ground, while carrying its questions and inspirations into what comes next.

In this hands-on workshop, we’ll start by generating electricity from soil using microbial fuel cells ⚡️
With artist Sunjoo Lee and researcher Fieke Jansen (Critical Infrastructure Lab), you will use mud batteries to power small electronic devices, discovering how energy can emerge from regenerative biological processes rather than extractive systems. This practice reveals principles of distributed, resilient, and symbiotic infrastructure design.
Then we’ll shift from soil to servers with researcher Kars Alfrink from TU Delft. We’ll question centralised cloud systems and resource-intensive data centres, while envisioning collective alternatives that prioritise people and planet over capital and control. A graphic facilitator, Lena Trotereau, will capture the process in real-time, creating a visual map of our collective thinking.
🗓️ Fri 27 March, 14:30-16:30
💸 Regular €10/Student €5- Tickets here: https://ccu.stager.co/shop/default/events/111630927

How many examples of circularity can you spot around the Hof van Cartesius? 👀 In this session, you will explore the area with the Datawalk method. During this collective documentation experience, you will snap pictures, record audio, or write a poem about the spots that spark your curiosity. Just bring your phone with Telegram installed! Your entries will build up a digital map of circular economy in the Hof.

Eigen Grond tells the story of the the garden of Hof van Cartesius. The garden plays a key role in the multispecies community living here. This hybrid space grounds the daily encounters and relationships among human, leafed, water, feathered, and furry bodies. These encounters are not always harmonious but riddled by frictions and conflicting agencies, leading to continuously renegotiate the boundaries between human and non-human, tame and wild, care and surrender.
Through this display of archival and newly recorded materials, the garden emerges as a dynamic space of attunement: a direct interface to engage with the complexity of ecological relations.

The terrain of Het Hof van Cartesius has a long history. After leaving its industrial past behind, it had no human purpose for a while. This wild piece of land became increasingly green, and the trees that grew there provided shade for this small ecosystem.
The area was given a new purpose: the Hof of Cartesius. In the construction plans the Boomtoren was erected, now living between willow and oak.
The residents of the Tree Tower tried to be good neighbors to these two trees. They deepened their relationship until they discovered that they were no neighbors, but part of the same ecosystem. And in that new relationship, they suddenly wondered: how old are they, actually?
By measuring the circumference of the trees and looking up their growth factors, they found that both trees were from 1946.
Now, 80 years later, we're celebrating! Come celebrate the birthday of the willow and the oak.

CCU opens its studio to a unique Living Lab, where artist and researcher Ivan Henriquez is working on his installation Ecoshroom. This project challenges our perception of intelligence in nature by exploring fungal decision-making and its impact on crop resilience. By making the invisible visible, Ecoshroom reimagines our relationship with food systems and the environment.
This interdisciplinary experiment offers a glimpse into a future where technology and nature collaborate—not just to cultivate crops, but to deepen our understanding of life’s complex networks. Join us to experience how art, science, and ecology intersect in this Living Lab!
