Things are going badly wrong in the Far North, and the Government is choosing to sit on its hands and let it happen. We have to take action now.
A sitting councillor, Davina Smolders has come forward in an interview with Duncan Garner on his podcast and described what is happening inside the Far North District Council. This is no petty disagreement over policy. It is a fundamental shift in who is exercising power and the complete overriding of democracy.
We are calling for Minister for Local Government Simon Watts to step in and appoint a Crown Observer.
Why? Because Councillor Smolders says on key council committees, unelected iwi and hapลซ representatives now outnumber elected councillors. These are not advisory positions where they simply to provide input. These are unelected people directly making decisions that flow through to full council; decisions that determine spending, priorities, and the rates that local families are forced to pay.
That means the people driving key decisions are, in many cases, not elected by the public, not accountable to voters, and not removable through any democratic process.
This is a direct challenge to the basic idea of representative government in New Zealand.
Councillor Smolders has done exactly what you would expect from someone taking their role seriously. She has raised concerns internally, attempted to work through the proper channels, and ultimately gone to central government asking for intervention.
She has called for a Crown Observer to be appointed so that there is independent oversight of what is happening and some restoration of accountability. Local residents have backed that call. Their concerns have been put clearly and directly to the Minister of Local Government, Simon Watts.
And nothing has happened.
Minister Watts has been made aware that a large number of unelected people have effectively taken over a council and he has done nothing. No intervention. No sense of urgency.
Is anyone else in the Government aware of this? It isn't a trivial issue. It is extremely serious and yet it isn't being treated with the seriousness it deserves.

Specifically the rear windscreen has been broken & is covered with a tarp atm on rainy nights things still get very wet.
It isn't road legal as it requires many other repairs also, so it's really in dire need of replacement for something better, safer & road legal.
We understand it's so so tough atm with petrol etc but every $ counts. It all does make a big difference.
This is a legitimate page, started by a caring person who just wants to do her bit for a man in need.

Party formation and my role
I was present at the formation of New Zealand Loyal alongside Hannah Spierer, Rob, Corina, Liz Gunn, and her son Dan. Rob proposed the name โLoyalโ. I authored the tagline โLoyal to you โ not to themโ and wrote every policy the party has ever released. These details, together with supporting evidence and contemporaneous records, were set out in full in the video โEpisode 102: Loyal or Not Loyal? Democratic leadership transition
In 2024 Liz Gunn unilaterally announced the closure of the party in a manner that was inconsistent with the partyโs constitution. A Special General Meeting was subsequently initiated by Lisa Williams. This was followed by a properly convened Annual General Meeting at which I was elected Leader of New Zealand Loyal โ the first time any leader of the party has been chosen by democratic vote of the members. A President, and interim board was elected. The party remains active and continues to operate in accordance with the will of its members. (This is also reflected in the public record, including Wikipediaโs entry on New Zealand Loyal, which confirms the party was deregistered in 2024 but has remained active under my leadership following the AGM.)
Legal proceedings
A case has been lodged in the Manukau District Court against Liz Gunn and former Party Secretary Michele Smith. The proceedings seek, among other orders:
the immediate return of the complete party membership list and all administrative materials; a full forensic accounting of the three bank accounts used to receive hundreds of thousands of dollars in donations; and other relief necessary to protect the rights of members and supporters.
These steps are being taken to ensure full transparency and accountability to every person who contributed to the party in good faith.
New Zealand Loyal is gaining traction precisely because it continues to focus on the real issues facing New Zealand families โ issues that the current political establishment refuses to address. The attempts by a former member to undermine that work through unsubstantiated personal attacks do not change the democratic mandate the membership has given the current leadership, nor do they alter the legal and constitutional realities.
We are aware of Ms Gunnโs recent remarks only through reports from supporters, as we have been blocked from the platforms on which they appear.
This has not prevented the facts from being placed before the public. The evidence we have presented โ including in the linked video and now through the court process โ stands unrefuted.

Democratic leadership transition
In 2024 Liz Gunn unilaterally announced the closure of the party in a manner that was inconsistent with the partyโs constitution. A Special General Meeting was subsequently initiated by Lisa Williams. This was followed by a properly convened Annual General Meeting at which I was elected Leader of New Zealand Loyal โ the first time any leader of the party has been chosen by democratic vote of the members. A President, and interim board was elected. The party remains active and continues to operate in accordance with the will of its members. (This is also reflected in the public record, including Wikipediaโs entry on New Zealand Loyal, which confirms the party was deregistered in 2024 but has remained active under my leadership following the AGM.)
Legal proceedings
A case has been lodged in the Manukau District Court against Liz Gunn and former Party Secretary Michele Smith. The proceedings seek, among other orders:
the immediate return of the complete party membership list and all administrative materials; a full forensic accounting of the three bank accounts used to receive hundreds of thousands of dollars in donations; and other relief necessary to protect the rights of members and supporters.
These steps are being taken to ensure full transparency and accountability to every person who contributed to the party in good faith.
New Zealand Loyal is gaining traction precisely because it continues to focus on the real issues facing New Zealand families โ issues that the current political establishment refuses to address. The attempts by a former member to undermine that work through unsubstantiated personal attacks do not change the democratic mandate the membership has given the current leadership, nor do they alter the legal and constitutional realities.
We are aware of Ms Gunnโs recent remarks only through reports from supporters, as we have been blocked from the platforms on which they appear.
This has not prevented the facts from being placed before the public. The evidence we have presented โ including in the linked video and now through the court process โ stands unrefuted.
