#Touchstones #Method

Matthew Arnold's "touchstone method" refers to his approach to literary criticism, which he outlined in his essay titled "The Study of Poetry." Arnold was a prominent 19th-century English poet and critic who believed that poetry should be evaluated based on its ability to convey and evoke genuine emotion and moral insight.

Arnold argued that great poetry should be able to serve as a "touchstone" for discerning true and lasting artistic merit. In this context, a touchstone is a black stone used to test the purity of gold; similarly, Arnold believed that poetry should be a measure by which the quality and significance of literary works could be judged.

According to Arnold, a touchstone poem possesses certain key qualities:

1. High Seriousness: Arnold emphasized the importance of poetry dealing with profound and weighty subjects, rather than frivolous or trivial matters. He believed that poetry should address the deeper aspects of human existence and contemplate fundamental questions.

2. Truth and Nature: Arnold believed that great poetry should aim to capture the essential truths of human life and nature. He encouraged poets to observe and depict the world with accuracy and honesty.

3. Sincerity and Authenticity: Arnold valued sincerity in poetry, emphasizing the need for genuine emotion and a heartfelt connection between the poet and their subject matter. He saw this sincerity as essential for producing work of lasting value.

4. Emphasis on Morality: Arnold believed that poetry should have a moral purpose, aiming to uplift and edify its readers. He saw poetry as a means to convey ethical and philosophical insights.

5. Judicious Criticism: Arnold argued that the touchstone method involves careful and thoughtful criticism. He believed that readers and critics should assess poetry with discernment, considering its adherence to the aforementioned criteria.

Arnold's touchstone method had a significant influence on literary criticism during his time and contributed to the development of a more systematic and analytical approach to evaluating poetry. While some aspects of his approach have been subject to debate and evolution over time, Arnold's emphasis on the moral and emotional impact of poetry remains a noteworthy aspect of his legacy in literary criticism.
