Michael had the strength of a warrior in his fight against cancer. He pursued emerging treatments energetically while remaining physically active, playing music, and staying politically engaged.
Last summer, Michael had regained enough energy to step forward as a leader of New Hampshire's Right to Try movement.
HB 701, a Right to Try bill signed by Governor Ayotte in August, was named in Michael's honor. In the fall, legislators introduced two more Right to Try bills—one of which was again named for Michael with his blessing.
The House resoundingly endorsed both bills two weeks ago, and Governor Ayotte asked the legislature to pass them.
Then, as now, Right to Try faced relentless opposition. But Michael, driven by empathy for sick and suffering patients, never backed down. One year ago, Michael wrote of opponents of Right to Try: "I have no nice words for them, considering they are fighting the most fragile & damaged people on the planet."
Michael rejected the idea that pro-innovation reforms should involve years of protracted deliberation. He explained his position in an op-ed he wrote last May.
"When you or someone you love hears the words 'you have cancer,' your world stops," he wrote. "The flood of emotions is overwhelming."
"But what comes next is just as hard. You begin a fight for your life. And in that fight, time is everything. You don't have the luxury of waiting for years of bureaucratic reviews and regulatory approvals. You need options. Now."
This morning, around the time Michael passed away, state legislators were discussing Right to Try in a committee of conference. As we pray for peace for Michael's family and loved ones, we also pray that legislators will do the right thing, move Right to Try forward, and continue to honor Michael's legacy and example.

In this particularly offbeat Senate session, Republican Senators have doubled down on multiple unacceptable positions for conservatives. Despite the unwavering support from most House Republicans on almost all of our core issues this session, GOP Senators halted or exploited all of our legislative priorities. On every issue Senate Republicans have largely taken an adversarial stance.

HB 1735 had the potential to further NH's ability to become a national leader in frontier therapies for the terminally ill— but unfortunately today's Senate amendment rendered the bill essentially meaningless.
Despite the disappointment today in the Senate we're grateful to the House and Governor for championing HB 1735. NH has tremendous potential to become a hub for these groundbreaking treatments. The work continues.

A bathroom bill forcibly separates bathrooms—SB 552 clarified the state’s right to distinguish biological sex in sports and various private spaces.
2. This is not the legislature's fault.
Ayotte's veto statement blamed the legislature for sending a bill she didn't like to her desk again. Vetoing repeatedly will not stop the people, nor should it be blamed on them.
3. This law is needed.
The need for this clarification is real. Male bullies who identify as girls have used locker room access to degrade and sexually harass their female classmates. Yet agencies and administrators have falsely claimed that New Hampshire prohibits all biological sex separation.
SB 552 would have put that false claim—and the abuse it defended—to rest.

The Supreme Court said in West Virginia v. B.P.J. that forcing females to compete against males creates “significant safety risks” and undermines “competitive fairness.” Ayotte agreed...then vetoed HB 1442 which protected NH locker rooms — where girls are most vulnerable.
