An Appeal for Fair Compensation and Legal Compliance for Ethiopia's Health Professionals

Dear All Social Media Influencers and Medias,

We hope this message finds you well.

We, the health professionals of Ethiopia, are writing to you regarding our ongoing struggle for fair pay and improved working conditions. As you may recall, we initiated a movement last year by presenting twelve clear demands to the government. Our initial requests were ignored, compelling us to escalate our protest through social media campaigns, public demonstrations, and ultimately, a strike.

The government's response was not to engage in dialogue but to resort to intimidation. Many of our colleagues were arbitrarily arrested, and while most were later released, many faced suspensions and other forms of professional coercion. In a misleading attempt to control the narrative, the government falsely claimed to have met with legitimate representatives of the protesting health workers, thereby misinforming both the public and the international community.

As the movement for justice began to gain momentum across other sectors, the government was obliged to announce a salary adjustment for all public sector employees. While we acknowledge this minor change, it is fundamentally insufficient for health professionals who have been at the forefront of this fight. We therefore reiterate our demand for a substantial and specific salary scale tailored to the critical role of health professionals.

Furthermore, we are facing a grave injustice in the implementation of even these modest gains. A critical issue concerns the calculation of duty payments. While the law mandates that these payments are based on our new monthly salaries, only institutions in Addis Ababa and federal universities are complying. Regional health bureaus are illegally calculating our payments based on the previous, lower salaries. This creates an unacceptable disparity where professionals performing the same duties receive different compensation simply based on their location. There is no legal basis for this practice; it is a direct violation of the government's own proclamations.

For example, a duty payment that should be approximately 15,000 Birr is being unlawfully reduced to around 7,000 Birr in the regions. This constitutes a withholding of our rightfully earned income.

We appeal to you to be a voice for us once again. Please help us highlight this systemic injustice and demand that the government:

1. Establish a dedicated and equitable salary scale for health professionals.

2. Immediately enforce uniform compliance with the law on duty payments across all regions and institutions.

3. Implement a new Incentive directive ( House Allowance, Risk Payment, Top up, Transportation etc )

We are exhausted by the government's failure to uphold its own laws and its disregard for those who safeguard the nation's health. Your continued solidarity has been a source of strength throughout our struggle, and we thank you for your unwavering support.
