Don't Be a Doctor in Ethiopia
The white coat is not a symbol of honor here; it is a burden. You will stand in overcrowded wards where there aren’t enough beds, where patients die from preventable causes, and where your efforts often feel futile.
You will spend years studying, sacrificing your youth to master the science of healing a nation, only to find that the system doesn’t care about you. The government won’t invest in you, the institutions won’t protect you.
You will work grueling hours, day and night, with little rest. You will witness suffering on an unimaginable scale—mothers losing their children, fathers breaking down because of medical bills they can’t afford for their children. You will pour everything you have into saving lives, but when you need help, no one will be there for you.
Your salary will be around $80 a month. That’s the price placed on your years of training, your sleepless nights, and your expertise in fighting death. There will be no health insurance, no financial security, no guarantee of safety. The only insurance you have is praying that you never fall ill, because if you do, you will realize the brutal truth: survival requires treatment you cannot afford.
And if you die, your story won’t make headlines. There will be no public outrage, no protests, no systemic change. Just another funeral. Another doctor lost too soon.
So, unless you are ready to give everything and receive nothing in return, don’t be a doctor in Ethiopia!
Rest In Peace Dr. Durressa

Doctors Must Refuse to Work for Exploitative Wages
Three months ago, I had an eye-opening experience that made me realize just how much private clinic owners exploit physicians.
I visited a barbershop and casually asked the barber how many customers he serves per day. He confidently replied, "At minimum, 20 people." Each customer pays at least 350 ETB, meaning his total daily earnings reach 3500 ETB. I was even more shocked when he explained the profit-sharing system: 50% goes to the shop owner, and the remaining 50% is his income.
At that moment, I felt an overwhelming sense of betrayal and frustration as I compared this to my own earnings as a physician working in a private clinic. Most private clinic owners are extremely selfish and exploitative. They pay doctors only 500 ETB per day, while they generate 30,000 to 40,000 ETB daily from patient consultations and procedures, not even including medication sales.
This realization struck me so hard that I made a firm decision: I will never work for any private clinic again under these unfair conditions.
My Decision & Strong Advice to Physicians
After recognizing this exploitation, I made a bold move: I left private clinics and focused on my own small business.
Today, I am earning 10 times more than what I used to make working in a private clinic. Now, I have financial freedom, time freedom, and dignity—things that no private clinic owner will ever give a physician.
To my fellow doctors: If we continue working for extremely low wages, clinic owners will never change. They will keep exploiting physicians as long as they can find someone willing to work for almost nothing. The only way to force them to be fair is to walk away from these exploitative jobs.
Unless you have absolutely no other way to survive, say NO to unfair wages. Let private clinic owners feel the absence of physicians and be forced to change their ways. As long as they can find doctors willing to work for pennies, they will never offer fair pay.
Better Alternatives for Doctors
Instead of working for unfair private clinics, physicians should:
1. Negotiate Fair Compensation – If you must work in a private clinic, demand a fair revenue-sharing model where at least 70% of consultation fees and 30% of investigation fees go to the doctor.
2. Open Your Own Clinic – If barbers and beauty salon workers can establish their own businesses, why can’t doctors? A group of physicians can invest together and create their own clinics rather than making greedy owners richer.
3. Explore Other Career Opportunities – Look for better-paying jobs like, NGOs, that offer fair wages and professional growth.
4. Explore International Job Opportunities – Additionally, telemedicine platforms allow doctors to consult patients remotely and earn in foreign currency.
5. Consider Additional Income Sources – If working in a clinic pays so little that you can’t cover your daily expenses, explore other business opportunities. Physicians are highly skilled and capable of succeeding in different fields.
Message to Private Clinic Owners: Stop the Greed!
To clinic owners: Learn from barbershops, beauty salons, and shopping centers. These businesses share profits fairly with workers. Stop being selfish and start valuing physicians properly. If doctors stop working under unfair conditions, you will be forced to change.
Final Call to Action
Doctors, your expertise is valuable—do not allow yourself to be exploited. Walk away from unfair wages, explore better opportunities inside and outside Ethiopia, and take control of your career. If we stand together, we can change this system of exploitation once and for all!

1. Financial Planning
- Avoid making any major purchases until you officially join the residency program and assess your needs. Prioritize essential expenses and plan your budget carefully.
- Be prepared for a delay in receiving your salary. You may not be paid for the first 3 to 4 months, so ensure you have enough savings or a support system to cover your living expenses during this period.
2. Housing
- Rent a house near TASH to minimize transportation challenges. Traffic in Addis Ababa can be overwhelming, and living close to the hospital will save you time and energy, especially during long shifts and emergencies.

4. Family Communication
- If you are married or have children, have an open and honest conversation with your family about the challenges you may face during residency. Residency is demanding, and their understanding and support will be crucial.
