These marches, which are considered the precursor to those that the Nazis perpetrated on deportees to the concentration camps about 30 years later, were organized by German officers in close agreement with the Young Turks movement. The supervisor was Major General Friedrich Bronsart von Schellendorf, a future Hitler supporter who compared the "parasitism" of the Armenians to that of the Jews. The marches involved approximately 1,200,000 Armenians, the total deaths of the extermination are estimated by historians between 1,500,000 and 2,000,000.
