On April 24, 1915, the Armenian genocide began, perpetrated by the Ottoman Empire with German complicity. At the outbreak of the First World War many Armenians deserted the Turkish army and joined the Russian one, therefore it was decided to eliminate the Armenian ethnic group from Anatolia through summary killings and deportations to Syria through the so-called "death marches" in which most of the deportees died of starvation, disease and exhaustion. These marches, which are considered the precursor to those that the Nazis perpetrated on deportees to the concentration camps about 30 years later, were organized by German officers in close agreement with the Young Turks movement. The supervisor was Major General Friedrich Bronsart von Schellendorf, a future Hitler supporter who compared the "parasitism" of the Armenians to that of the Jews. The marches involved approximately 1,200,000 Armenians, the total deaths of the extermination are estimated by historians between 1,500,000 and 2,000,000.
