Google has unveiled Project Suncatcher, a bold research initiative to explore scaling machine learning computation in space. The company envisions a constellation of solar-powered satellites equipped with its Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) AI chips, capable of harnessing the full energy of the Sun to power advanced AI systems beyond Earth.

According to the first research paper released today, the team is studying satellite design, communication, and radiation effects on TPUs. Together with Planet, Google plans to launch two prototype satellites by 2027, marking a first step toward a future of space-based AI infrastructure.
