the european union passed a new mandate that usb-c be the cable that devices use to charge and sync. tech journalists predictably are focused on apple because of their bewildering choice to keep using lightning, but it's a pretty big deal: the mandate requires usb-c on "all phones, tablets, digital cameras, headphones, headsets, earbuds, ..." by the end of 2024.
most of those already had usb-c, but here's the kicker: laptops will be required to also use usb-c for charging from spring of 2026.
