What if every SaaS app spoke English?

In the last month, Hubspot launched ChatSpot. Zendesk AI automates customer support. Salesforce launched AI Cloud. Adobeโ€™s released Firefly. What do all of these launches & many other similar ones have in common?

The largest SaaS companies in the world have released English-language APIs. Anyone can write English to enter some input (e.g., โ€œWhat are my top leads for this week?โ€) & receive an answer.

Previous APIs require learning programming languages to use & have been reserved for developers.

When every major SaaS application has an English-language API, users of all kinds will be able to ask & receive answers of their applications. That is a meaningful innovation.

English language APIs allow for another layer of abstraction.
Imagine being able to write :

Find my top 10 expansion leads this week from Hubspot, then collect their logos, & for each one create an image in Adobe Firefly that puts the companyโ€™s logo on a racecar alongside my companyโ€™s logo as an attachment to the email. Then draft an email to each prospect using data from their customer support tickets & save them in my drafts folder.

Thatโ€™s a level of automation rarely seen within the enterprise without custom coding. That workflow alone - if it worked - might save a dayโ€™s work. Examples like these illustrate conceptually how AI could unlock 1000x the GDP growth of the PC.

This vision glosses over many important considerations.

First, data security & data loss prevention. How would security leads ensure the workflow is executed by an authorized person, on permitted data, using sanctioned models, & the process complies with international data regulations?

Second, English APIs (aka LLMs) are probabilistic. They err, just like humans. Potential errors could be grave (imagine updating all Hubspot CRM recordsโ€™ owner to a current user). Monitoring, testing, & rollback/undo buttons will be critical.

Over the past few decades, developers have built systems like this for code : code review, testing, monitoring, isolation. If everyone in a company will have the power to orchestrate software through a natural language API, they will also require equivalent tooling for application development.

As models & controls improve, SaaS orchestration through natural-language APIs will massively improve productivity.
What happened to Reddit recently about api pricing? By PERPLEXITY

Recently, Reddit announced changes to its API pricing, which will take effect on July 1, 2023. Under the new guidelines, third-party apps that access Reddit's data will be charged for requests. The company will charge $0.24 per 1,000 API calls, which could be costly for developers of popular apps. For example, Apollo, a popular Reddit app for Apple products, can make upwards of 7 billion requests in a month, which comes out to nearly $20 million per year. The company's pricing has been criticized as being extreme, with some developers claiming that Reddit's price is still higher than other services, such as Imgur. The changes have led to outrage among hundreds of thousands of Redditors, with many subreddits going dark as a sign of protest. The protests caused Reddit to crash for three hours on June 12, 2023. Reddit CEO Steve Huffman defended the pricing changes, saying that "Reddit needs to be a self-sustaining business, and to do that, we can no longer subsidize commercial entities that require large-scale data use." However, some believe that the changes are an intentional death knell for third-party Reddit apps, similar to how Twitter virtually eliminated third-party apps with its API price hike in February.

Here is the full internal memo from Reddit CEO.

โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”
Hi Snoos,

Starting last night, about a thousand subreddits have gone private. We do anticipate many of them will come back by Wednesday, as many have said as much. While we knew this was coming, it is a challenge nevertheless and we have our work cut out for us. A number of Snoos have been working around the clock, adapting to infrastructure strains, engaging with communities, and responding to the myriad of issues related to this blackout. Thank you, team.

We have not seen any significant revenue impact so far and we will continue to monitor.

Thereโ€™s a lot of noise with this one. Among the noisiest weโ€™ve seen. Please know that our teams are on it, and like all blowups on Reddit, this one will pass as well. The most important things we can do right now are stay focused, adapt to challenges, and keep moving forward. We absolutely must ship what we said we would. The only long term solution is improving our product, and in the short term we have a few upcoming critical mod tool launches we need to nail.

While the two biggest third-party apps, Apollo and RIF, along with a couple others, have said they plan to shut down at the end of the month, we are still in conversation with some of the others. And as I mentioned in my post last week, we will exempt accessibility-focused apps and so far have agreements with RedReader and Dystopia.

I am sorry to say this, but please be mindful of wearing Reddit gear in public. Some folks are really upset, and we donโ€™t want you to be the object of their frustrations.

Again, weโ€™ll get through it. Thank you to all of you for helping us do so.

Role: Serial entrepreneur who have dealt with controversial and sensitive issues for a company.

Task: Derive major insight we can learn from <Reddit's problem> and <response from the twitter community>. And suggest what should have Reddit CEO did? And if you were Reddit CEO right now what could he consider mitigating the problem?
โ€”โ€”โ€”
Major Insights:

From the Reddit incident and the response from the Twitter community, we can derive a few key insights:

Business Decisions vs Community Sentiments: The reaction to Reddit's API pricing changes demonstrates the conflict between a company's need to monetize its offerings and the desire of the user community to maintain accessibility. The move was viewed by many as a deliberate attempt to phase out third-party apps, which led to backlash.

Transparency and Communication: Reddit's CEO, Steve Huffman's internal memo and public statements were viewed as understating the situation. His message didn't address the concerns raised by developers and users. This highlights the importance of clear and honest communication in managing a crisis situation.

Impact on Brand Image and Trust: The decision not to intervene and save Apollo and RIF, two major third-party apps, further eroded trust among users and developers. As a result, Reddit's brand image has been negatively affected.

What Reddit's CEO should have done:

Engage Stakeholders Early: Before making such a significant change, Huffman should have reached out to the developer community and other key stakeholders to discuss the proposed changes, their potential impact, and possible mitigation strategies.

Clearer and More Empathetic Communication: The internal memo should have addressed the controversy head-on and shown more empathy towards those affected. Instead of simply stating that the outrage will pass, Huffman could have acknowledged the frustrations and detailed concrete steps to address the concerns.

Consider a Gradual Roll-out or Alternative Pricing Structures: Instead of abruptly introducing a high cost, Huffman could have considered a gradual increase in API pricing or introduce tiered pricing models based on usage. This could have lessened the immediate financial burden on developers.

As Reddit CEO right now, consider the following to mitigate the problem:

Reassess the Pricing Model: Explore a more flexible pricing structure that balances Reddit's need for revenue and the developers' ability to afford the service.

Open Dialogue with the Community: Engage in a genuine dialogue with the Reddit community to understand their concerns, suggestions, and expectations. Transparency will help rebuild trust.

Support Developers: Consider providing financial support or transition assistance to the most-affected developers. This shows good faith and that Reddit values their contributions.

Revisit Decision on Apollo and RIF: Reconsider the decision on not stepping in to save Apollo and RIF. The negative sentiment around these apps' potential shutdown is considerable and addressing it could help improve public perception.

Summarize this contents and derive key insights as a ai related startup founder and investor via Perplexity copilot feature.

#1 As an AI startup founder and investor, here are some key insights from the provided search results:
Google's ownership of YouTube could give it an edge in AI. YouTube is the single biggest and richest source of imagery, audio, and text transcripts on the internet, and Google's researchers have been using it to develop its next large-language model, Gemini. OpenAI has also secretly used data from YouTube to train some of its AI models.

#2 Open-source AI is gaining on Google and ChatGPT. Meta Platforms gave academics access to sophisticated machine-learning models that can understand conversational language, which they turned into open-source software that powered free alternatives to ChatGPT and other proprietary AI software. Free AI models are now "reasonably close" in performance to proprietary models from Google and ChatGPT creator OpenAI, and most software developers will eventually opt to use the free ones

#3 Google and DeepMind are working together to develop software to compete with OpenAI. Known internally as Gemini, the joint effort began in recent weeks, after Google stumbled with Bard, its first attempt to compete with OpenAI's chatbot

#4 Generative AI startups need their own data. Google, Amazon, Meta Platforms, and Microsoft are jostling to develop products that use generative AI. Startups such as Descript, which uses generative artificial intelligence to shortcut the laborious video-editing process, are trying to immunize themselves from looming big tech competition

#5 The European antitrust case against Google might or might not matter. The Europeans have concluded, in a preliminary way, that Google favors its own "online display advertising technology services to the detriment of competing providers". This is no small matter, as Google controls the tools most commonly used by both websites selling ad space and marketers buying ad space on websites across the internet. However, it remains to be seen whether this case will have a significant impact on Google's AI-related activities.

#6 Google is preparing to teach foreign languages through Google Search. The project, referred to internally as Tivoli, grew out of its Google Research unit and is likely to be rolled out later this year.

#7 The creator economy is facing challenges and opportunities with AI. Dmitry Shapiro and Sean Thielen, the co-founders of a startup that developed Koji, a tool that offers link-in-bio landing pages to house creators' digital storefronts, are planning to focus on a new AI product they're developing called YouAI. However, venture capitalists such as Ben Mathews are predicting a wave of failures among creator economy startups as they run out of cash

AMD has revealed the Mi 300X chip, which has an industry-leading 192 GB memory capacity, 5.2 TB per second memory bandwidth, and is designed for generative AI. It reduces the number of GPUs required and development time needed for deploying the Mi 300X while accelerating customers' time to market, reducing overall development costs and making deployment effortless. The Mi 300A is currently being sampled while the Mi 300X and eight GPU Instinct platform will begin sampling in Q3, with production expected in Q4 of this year.
