Yemen’s Ansar Allah (Houthi) movement has warned it could shut down the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a key route linking the Indian Ocean with the Suez Canal, if it intervenes to support Iran, according to Press TV.
A senior Yemeni commander said the first step could be a naval blockade targeting U.S. and Israeli vessels, including merchant ships and warships.
The strait is one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints:
About 12% of global seaborne oil passes through it.
Nearly a quarter of global trade moves along this route.
At its narrowest, it is only about 32 km (20 miles) wide, making shipping highly vulnerable.
