In both Preciado’s and Nelson’s work, transition is understood neither from a point of arrival nor in relation to an ideal of completion. This nonteleological understanding of trans is exemplified through Jack Halberstam’s use of the term “trans*,” which resonates with Deleuzian becoming — a movement without beginning or end, and without origin. «A becoming», Deleuze and Guattari write, «is always in the middle; one can only get it by the middle». For Halberstam, trans* encapsulates this becoming and designates an open field of possibility for self-determination in relation to gender variability and identity. The asterisk «modifies the meaning of transitivity by refusing to situate transition in relation to a destination, a final form, a specific shape, or an established configuration of desire and identity».
