Where does our fat go when we exercise?
CrowdScience
If, like this week’s Crowdscience listener Lili, you’re an avid gymgoer, you may well have wondered where your fat disappears to when you exercise?
Well, the short answer is that we convert it to energy that powers a whole range of physical processes, from breathing to walking as well as lying down and doing nothing. But the science behind energy expenditure is a little more complicated than that.
Presenter Anand Jagatia pops on an exercise bike to have his metabolism measured, and learns that he may be relying on an entirely different source of fuel as he works up a sweat. But is all that hard work worth the effort it involves? Recent research suggests there's a limit to the number of calories us humans can burn, and that doing physical activity isn’t a sure-fire way to keep trim.
Even hunter-gatherers who walk 13,000 steps a day have the same metabolic rate as the average American. So if working out isn't the best way to lose weight, how about harnessing our own fat to tackle the complications of obesity? It used to be thought brown fat was exclusive to babies (and bears) but we now know adults have some of it too, and it seems to play a vital role in combatting a range of chronic diseases including hypertension and diabetes.
Looking for more insights into Parkinson's disease? The impact of electric fields on α-synuclein fibrils, a protein that plays a crucial role in the onset and progression of the disease, has been studied using molecular dynamics simulations. These simulations have provided valuable insights into the changes in α-synuclein structure caused by electric fields, which could ultimately help us better understand the mechanisms of Parkinson's disease. It's great to acknowledge and appreciate the hard work and dedication of researchers! Thanks for the fruitful cooperation of researchers from the Center for Advanced Technologies, including Artyom Baev and Mukhriddin Makhkamov, Master's student Sunnatullo Fazliev from Heidelberg University, Docent Parthiban Marimuthu from Abo Akademy University, and Scientist Erkin Kurganov from the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. Dars 15: Jamoamiz a'zosi 4-kurs talabasi Muhammadali Niyozaliev Gibbs erkin energiyasini molekulyar dinamika uslubida qanday hisoblash kerakligini batafsil tushuntirib bergan. Bu kimyoviy potensial ham deb aytiladi yani molekulani suyuqlikka kiritish uchun qancha ish bajarilishi kerakligini ko'rsatadi. Agar molekula uchun suvga kirish erkin energiyasi qiymatlari manfiy bo'lsa, jarayon tashqi kuchlarsiz spontan ro'y beradi (suv bilan aralashma hosil qiladi deb xulosa qilish mumkin). Agar musbat qiymatlarni ko'rsatsa katta ehtimollik bilan molekula gidropob xususiyatga ega bo'ladi, yani suv bilan aralashma hosil qilmaydi yoki fazaviy ajralish ro'y beradi. Yesterday, the International Scientific Conference on "New Materials and Helio-technologies" kicked off in the Institute of Material Sciences, Parkent region. The conference drew scientists from around the world, including South Korea, Switzerland, the US, Germany, China, Italy, France, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Belarus, and Russia. Prof. Anvar Zakhidov delivered an amazing plenary talk on Carbon nanostructures and their applications, followed by insightful presentations from Prof. Gurdial Blugan and Dr. N. Sena Yüzbasi on Silicon oxycarbide-tin nanocomposites for high performance anode materials for Li-ion batteries and high-performance ceramics. We also discussed potential collaborations with Prof. Jingxiang Low on CO2 conversion. My student Davron Abduvokhidov presented his first talk on bio-nanosensors. Though Prof. Masaharu Shiratani couldn't attend the event, he did send a short video message. All in all, it was an enlightening conference.
