A New Mexico court has ordered Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, to pay $567 million into a youth mental-health fund after finding that its platforms harmed young users.

The ruling also requires Meta to introduce stronger protections for minors in New Mexico, including tighter age verification, limits on certain notifications and additional safeguards around interactions between adults and minors.

The latest award comes on top of a previous $375 million penalty, bringing Meta’s total financial liability in the case to $942 million. Meta has said it plans to appeal the ruling.

🇹🇬 BREAKING: Lawsuits Over Social Media Addiction

The world’s biggest social media companies are set to face thousands of lawsuits over allegations that they have deliberately made their platforms addictive to young users.

The San Francisco-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Monday ruled that more than 3,000 lawsuits against Meta, TikTok, Google, Snap, and other tech firms can move forward. The lawsuits were filed by states, municipalities, school districts, and individuals.

The suits come amid an emerging critique of social media companie's role in social media addiction and broader mental health crisis among youth.

The lawsuits will now continue in district court. Plaintiffs are seeking damages, civil penalties, and restitution.

🇹🇬UPDATE: Meta Adds USDC Payments for Ads

Meta has added USDC stablecoin payments for Meta ads, allowing advertisers to pay for their advertising using supported third-party cryptocurrency wallets.

The company supports stablecoin wallets that use USDC, including MetaMask, Coinbase and Binance. When advertisers pay with USDC, a third-party payment partner converts the stablecoin into local currency and settles the payment with Meta, which then credits the advertiser’s ad account.

Meta also allows creators to receive cryptocurrency through its creator monetization system. The company clarified that it does not issue, sell or custody stablecoins, instead working with third-party payment providers.

🇹🇬 JUST IN: Bijnor Police social media accounts hacked

The official social media accounts of Bijnor Police were hacked a few mins ago, prompting the department to advise people not to respond to messages or click on links sent from the compromised accounts.

Bijnor SP Abhishek Jha said, “The police’s X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook accounts were hacked and unauthorised messages were posted and sent through them. Efforts are being made to regain control of the accounts.”

Officials learnt about the hack after fake posts began appearing on the accounts. Jha appealed to people to remain cautious and avoid responding to any messages received from the Bijnor Police X account until it is recovered.

Meta Platforms agreed to pay a maximum $16.68 billion as part of a settlement to resolve claims brought by states across the country that the company designed Facebook and Instagram to addict children, misled consumers about their safety, and improperly collected personal data of children who used its platforms.

The settlement was reached during a California federal trial over claims brought by 29 states, averting one of the highest-profile tests yet of allegations that social media companies harmed young users.

A hacker reportedly drained an estimated $75 million from Tectonic, a crypto lending protocol on the Cronos blockchain. The attacker allegedly manipulated Tectonic’s token price by nearly 100×, then used the inflated value as collateral to borrow real assets.

In response, Cronos halted the entire network to prevent further movement of the stolen funds. Reports indicate only around $6 million had reached Ethereum before the halt.
