Content Warning: Transphobia and Trans-Misogyny I was on reading up on Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and her transphobia and that led me to an abundance of terf accounts on twitter. What it reminded me of was the existence of terfs that completely and wholeheartedly…
CW: Transphobia, Trans-Misogyny

another thing these people believe in is that they believe maleness is naturally violent and unpleasant therefore AMAB trans women being the “violent” aggressors because of what? calling your transphobia out? this idea goes away the minute they are faced with actual resistance from the trans community and have to see that oh! afab people are also completely capable of sending death threats and showing anger! like for example people were calling Akwaeke Emezi a violent trans person over this tweet (which btw, has resulted in 0 real life violence because everyone could understand its a figure of speech from the oppressed group fighting back against their oppressors) meanwhile Emezi is a non binary afab person. so now in reaction to Emezi, terfs use the “trans ideology is violent and misogynistic” instead of “trans women are violent” because the person calling them out isn’t even a trans woman. but then they turn around and continue making out the trans women as aggressors.
it’s extremely disheartening to see as a feminist because this is the same rhetoric actual misogynists use to shut feminists (especially feminist women) up. by calling us “violent” “emotional” and “irrational”.
just found a diary entry from 2019 and i thought i wrote it like a few weeks ago…. apparently things do NOT get better! at all!

and it’s not just Americans i definitely see it w people here too, especially younger and sorry to say but more sheltered youth, people haven’t ever done community work and don’t even know its an option.
People find consuming media a work of activism in which when you consume the “right” product, the LGBT+ inclusive or BIPOC led show/movie you’re doing anything special. I see white people feeling superior on stan twt simply because their favorite character is a POC. it’s laughable because it’s nothing real! you’re far from making real change! and same goes for consuming “wrong” media, simply reading something from an author w questionable ideas doesn’t make you automatically agree with them, many times you NEED to read wrong books to learn why it’s wrong/inhumane/immoral.

and also I’m really not blaming kids for thinking like this. I was one of those kids! it’s because they want you to believe this is all you can do. consume or not consume. the idea of creation and more than that, creation of spaces and real life action is scary to governments to put simply. They want you to think this is all the activism and political work you can do. it’s bleak to be honest.
such a good example! because it was just a (very fun) show. the director and the actors weren’t doing anything crazy like lovely piece of art thank you! but the way the fans acted like it was a radical act was very weird. especially because they’re mostly white and they were treating these white people like gods for the bare minimum…

definitely see your point but I think it’s good to point out consuming =/= supporting. just reading a book isn’t supporting, maybe buying it is (although in my humble opinion, it still doesn’t make someone morally bad or aligned with the author) but reading a library copy etc is different. also many times this condemnation of consuming media is about dead people’s stuff.

I surely agree that we need a broader conversation of what exactly is “support” both for bad people/media/art and good people/media/art. Is it enough that I’m reading this insightful book by this Black author? Shouldn’t I apply these ideas to my real life for my “support” to mean anything? Shouldn’t I keep giving platform and uplifting indie Black voices?
and that kind of ties into what I’m trying to get at tbh. That creator is doing real life harm w that money but if I don’t consume their media it still isn’t enough for them to stop. JKR will forever make money out of the movies/books of HP. What is a real rebuttal in my opinion is doing work / mutual aid / supporting trans voices in this case ourselves. It’s not enough to get JKR to stop inflicting pain, we need to work on making progress and fight back in real life too.
But I do agree not buying the products is a nice small step to begin with! just so far that it doesn’t become all the “activism” people do.
