In 2015, Apple tried to crush Spotify.

They demanded 30% of Spotify’s revenue, blocked app updates, and even threatened to kick Spotify out of the App Store.

Then Apple launched Apple Music. They had huge advantages:

Spotify was much smaller and should have lost.

But Apple made a big mistake: instead of playing fair, they used their power to hurt Spotify.

They charged Spotify a 30% fee.
So Apple Music could cost $9.99/month, but Spotify had to charge $12.99 or lose money.

Spotify refused to fall into the trap.
They removed in-app subscriptions. Users had to go to Spotify’s website and pay there.

This move saved them — but made Apple angry.

Apple punished Spotify:

* Blocked updates
* Rejected new features
* Didn’t let bug fixes go live

Apple Music kept getting better, while Spotify’s app suffered.

But Spotify had something Apple couldn’t control: it worked *everywhere*.

* Android, Windows, PlayStation, Tesla, smart TVs
* And yes, even on Apple devices

Spotify focused on being available to everyone.

By 2019, Spotify saw Apple wouldn’t stop.
They sued Apple in Europe, saying Apple was abusing its power.

The EU agreed and started a big antitrust case against Apple.
For the first time, Apple’s App Store power was being challenged.

Spotify kept improving too:

* AI playlists
* Better recommendations
* Huge podcast deals (Joe Rogan, Call Her Daddy, etc.)

Apple Music stayed pretty basic.

The results? By 2025:

* Spotify: over 675 million users, 263 million paid subscribers
* Apple Music: about 112 million subscribers

Despite Apple’s efforts, Spotify won the streaming war.

But the legal fight isn’t over.
In 2025, Apple still faces pressure to change its App Store rules.

Regulators are forcing Apple to open up payments and stop unfair practices.

The lesson? Even with all the money in the world, Goliath doesn’t always win.

Spotify, the underdog, fought back — and it worked.

And this fight is still going.
