DeFi Has Changed Fast — 4 of the Top 8 Protocols Are Newcomers
Just three years ago, Eigenlayer, Etherfi, Spark, and Ethena didn’t even exist. Now, they are in the top 8 DeFi protocols by Total Value Locked (TVL).
Here’s something interesting: all top 8 protocols are focused on yield — helping users earn more on their assets.
Meanwhile, popular DEXes like Uniswap, Curve, and PancakeSwap have dropped in rank. Maybe providing liquidity (LPing) isn't worth the risk of impermanent loss anymore?
Some Big Changes:
Aave jumped from 4th to 1st — TVL up by 315%
Uniswap dropped from 6th to 10th
Curve fell from 4th to 19th — lost half its TVL
PancakeSwap dropped from 5th to 24th — also lost 50% TVL
Convex slid from 8th to 35th
MakerDAO used to be #1, but now its sub-project Spark is leading the way.
Also, Binance’s staked ETH is now as big as Lido was three years ago — that's major growth.
Ethena is booming again and is close to reaching its highest-ever TVL.
But here’s the real question: is TVL still the best way to measure success?
If we look at protocol fees instead, DEXes like PancakeSwap and Uniswap are doing better — ranked 4th and 5th by fee revenue.
Or maybe it’s about revenue shared with holders? If so, that changes the game even more.
Don’t ignore Babylon — now ranked in the top 9, and it’s also yield-focused. This shift could point to early signals of the next 100x DeFi projects.
