From iCog Labs and AGI research to Addis AI, Hasab AI, Gheero and emerging African-language LLM research, Ethiopian builders are starting to attack one of the biggest problems in AI:
How do we make machines understand Africa?
Amharic. Afaan Oromo. Tigrinya. Somali.
Our data. Our culture. Our problems. Our people.
At the same time, EAII, INSA, universities and Ethiopia’s upcoming AI University are building the talent and institutional foundation.
And Ethiopia already has a growing digital layer — telebirr, Chapa, ArifPay, ZayRide, BeU and many others.
The next step is connecting that infrastructure with intelligence.
LLMs → AI Agents → Advanced AI → AGI.
Maybe Ethiopia won't build the biggest model in the world.
But what if we build the AI that understands Africa better than anyone else?

What makes me upset is the revenue generation problem for our products in Ethiopia. This shit must be solved, or with this inflation, we’re gonna be beggars soon.

Afesa came for me. My father responded by sending me to the countryside for two weeks of unpaid character assassination!
I left as a developer.
For two weeks, I was basically doing ላብ አደር jobs — manual labor DLC with no skip button like 18cent negro 💀
Then my father blessed my soul with the energy of an 18th-century negro slave owner and basically said:
“Nigga listen, AI might replace you soon anyway. So go build your stuff, get rich, then come back and own your farm. ይሄ ነው የsoftware engineer መጨረሻ።”l 🚜
The farm tried to delete me.
Manual labor tried to factory-reset my personality.
ፀሀይዋ overtime እየሰራች ነበር😭
But the countryside made one fatal mistake:
የ Wi-Fi addiction-ን መግደል ረሱ።
🗿 እንስሳው survived and ተመልሷል fam.

For a long time, I’ve been wondering why local e-commerce still isn’t common across Ethiopian cities and communities—places like Ambo, Woliso, Adama, Asella, and even around university campuses. We already buy and sell through Telegram, Facebook, and word of mouth, so why not make it easier with one local marketplace?
A friend of mine who works at Ethiopian Airlines asked me to build a Telegram Mini App for his business. He sources products from different parts of the world and sells them locally, and the idea has already been working well around Addis Ababa, Adama, Dire Dawa, and Asella.
That experience pushed me to take the idea further.
Now I’m cooking DealArada 🚀 — a local e-commerce platform where people can buy and sell products in their own cities and communities. The vision is to grow it from a website into a full platform and app.

sooo… i’d say it was a pretty great summer.
tried a bunch of different things, went to different places, did some hiking…
what an adventure.
the agency had a really good run too. we managed to get 6+ client projects and crossed 500k+ in revenue, which still feels kinda crazy to say.
learned a LOT from the whole experience dealing with clients, managing projects, handling all the little things that come with running an agency… at this point, i might actually become a great PM someday ig 😂

but probably my favorite part of the summer was just trying things. some worked, some failed, some went completely differently than expected… and somehow, all of it taught me something.
