I'm always impressed by the supportive environment in Software Engineering at AASTU. The people are amazing; even though the academics are challenge, you will benefit from the community. I've spoken a couple of times on welcome events to fresh joiners in this department.π
There are a lot of untold stories of successful students here. I hope other #departments learn from this and help juniors by sharing experiences. π

Keynote from the guests, Ibsa, Dagmawi, and Ruth:π
1. "Imposter syndrome is common, and you should feel it. If you are at the top and don't have anything to learn in one place, you are in the wrong place. But don't compare yourself with others. Embrace the discomfort of growth; it's a sign of progress and an opportunity to evolve."
2. "Learn to say no; take care of yourself. Your well-being is not a luxury; it's a necessity. Saying no is not a weakness but a strength that preserves your energy for what truly matters."
3. "Don't try to follow everyone's path; don't try to learn everything at the same time. We all have our learning preferences; stay calm. Focus on your journey, prioritize what resonates with you, and understand that growth is a gradual process."
4. "If you are not interested in software, at least give it a try. The department itself may be boring, but if you make it your hobby, you will get the most out of it. Find the passion within the subject; it's often the key to unlocking its true potential."
5. "Make sure there are three types of people in your surroundings: the ones we learn from, the ones equal to us, and the ones we help. Surround yourself with a diverse network that fosters continuous learning, mutual support, and personal growth."
6. "Take action for things you want to do in life. Knowledge itself is nothing; convert it into solving problems, at least your own. Apply what you learn; transform information into practical solutions that contribute to your personal and professional development."
7. "Life is bigger and temporary. Be grateful for your growth. "

Think about this: a ship is always safe when it stays close to the shore, but that's not why it was made. The ship was built for something moreβto sail the vast ocean, explore new places, and face challenges head-on. Similarly, in life, staying in our comfort zones may feel secure, but it won't help us grow or fulfill our true potential. We need to take risks, step into the unknown, and embrace the adventures that lie ahead. It's in those moments of uncertainty that we discover our strengths, learn valuable lessons, and become stronger individuals.
So, don't be afraid to leave the safety of the shore and set sail toward your dreams. You are meant for so much more than just playing it safe.

I recently had the opportunity to watch "A Million Miles Away (2023),"
a brilliantly scripted and inspiring film based on the true story of California's Jose Hernandez.
This remarkable movie beautifully conveys the themes of dedication and the pursuit of dreams. It chronicles the incredible journey of Jose Hernandez, the first migrant farmworker to achieve the remarkable feat of becoming an American astronaut.
And also, I had the privilege of listening to Dr. Tilaye Tadesse 's πͺπΉ story A while ago, and it truly exemplifies how dedication to one's dreams can ultimately lead to success.
Recommend you to see this movie on your weekends.

"The Chinese Room" - John Searle
The Chinese Room thought experiment was proposed by philosopher John Searle to challenge the notion that computers or programs alone can possess true understanding or consciousness. It raises questions about the nature of comprehension and whether symbol manipulation alone is enough for genuine understanding.

"Imagine a room where a person who doesn't understand Chinese is given instructions in English to manipulate Chinese symbols. They receive written questions in Chinese and follow the instructions to generate seemingly intelligent responses. But here's the catch: the person inside the room doesn't actually understand Chinese at all."
