"The Chinese Room" - John Searle

"Imagine a room where a person who doesn't understand Chinese is given instructions in English to manipulate Chinese symbols. They receive written questions in Chinese and follow the instructions to generate seemingly intelligent responses. But here's the catch: the person inside the room doesn't actually understand Chinese at all."

The Chinese Room thought experiment was proposed by philosopher John Searle to challenge the notion that computers or programs alone can possess true understanding or consciousness. It raises questions about the nature of comprehension and whether symbol manipulation alone is enough for genuine understanding.
