After 20 years, the Mars Express spacecraft will get rid of Windows 98

The spacecraft's software was originally designed over 20 years ago.

💡The European Space Agency (ESA) is performing an overdue upgrade on its Mars orbiter.

💡Engineers from ESA are preparing to upgrade the software for their Mars orbiter, called Mars Express, from Windows 98, a press statement reveals.

💡The Mars Express spacecraft launched in 2003, and has been orbiting the red planet for more than 19 years. All that time, Mars Advanced Radar for Subsurface and Ionospheric Sounding (MARSIS) instrument has been using software built with Windows 98. 

💡"We've faced a number of challenges to improve the performance of MARSIS," Carlo Nenna, MARSIS on-board software engineer at Enginium, who is responsible for the upgrade, explained in the statement. "Not least because the MARSIS software was originally designed over 20 years ago".

It was only a few months ago, that we reported how Mojo Vision is working on these smart contact lenses capable of projecting images while sitting on the eye. The company aims to achieve this by packing the world's densest display on a surface that is not more than 0.5 mm in diameter.🧐

A team of researchers has successfully restored partial vision to a blind man using a new kind of gene therapy, according to a recent study published in the journal Nature Medicine. 👀

This is a major milestone for a gene-based therapy that can effectively reverse a state of near-total blindness, and it involves injecting patients in the eye and then activating genes with light-producing goggles. "The findings provide proof of concept that using optogenetic therapy to partially restore vision is possible," said Botond Roska, the founding director at the Institute of Molecular and Clinical Opthalmology in Basel, according to a Technology Networks report. 🧬

The engineer crafted and welded a new entire external system that ensures the bike still works.

When you think of a bicycle, you think of its wheels. Those wheels need to be equipped with spokes and a frame to function properly. Right? Apparently, no.

YouTuber engineer The Q transforms his bike into a hubless vehicle by removing the entire internal hub from the wheels of his bicycle. This is no easy feat and takes a lot of time and effort.

He outright replaces these parts of the bicycle, creating a whole new foundation, and voila, the bike does not fall apart. This video brings you that whole process from beginning to end.

NFT- Non-fungible token የሚለው ምሕጻረ ቃልን ይወክላል።

የኤንኤፍቲ ጽንሰ ሃሳብ ለመረዳት እና እንዴት እንደሚሰራ ለማወቅ ሦስት መሠረታዊ ጉዳዮችን ቀድመን መገንዘብ ይኖርብናል።
የመጀመሪያው የኤንኤፍቲ ኢኮሚያዊ ትርጉሜ ሲሆን ሁለተኛ ደግሞ የብሎክቼይን ጽንሰ ሃሳብን መረዳት ይጠይቃል።

ፈንጀብል (Fungible) የሚለውን ቃል የኦክስፎርድ ኢኮኖሚክስ መዝገበ ቃላት “የአንድ ዕቃ በሌላ ተመሳሳይ ዕቃ የመተመካት አቅም’ (the ability of a good or asset to replaceable by another identical item) ሲል ይተረጉመዋል።

ይህ በአጭሩ ‘ፈንጀብል’ መተኪያ ያለው፤ ወይም በሌላ ተመሳሳይ ነገር ሊቀየር የሚችል ነገር እንደማለት ነው።

ለምሳሌ አንድ የ10 ብር ኖት በሁለት የባለ አምስት ብር ኖቶች ሊቀየር ይችላል። 1 ባለ 10 ብር ኖት በሁለት የአምስት ብር ኖቶች ስለሚተካ ባለ 10 ብር ኖት መተኪያ አለው ማለት ነው።

non-fungible (ነን-ፈንጀብል) ማለት ደግሞ በተቃራኒው መተኪያ የሌለው፤ በሌላ የማይቀየር ነገር ማለት ነው።

ለዚህ ምሳሌ ሊሆን የሚችለው የሞናሊዛ ስዕል ነው። ሊዮናርዶ ዳቪንቺ በእጁ ስሎ ሞናሊዛ ሲል የሰየመው የጥበብ ሥራ አንድ ብቻ ነው።

'ዘ ሉቭ' የምትገኘው ሞናሊዛ አንድ ብቻ ናት። በሌላ ልትተካ አትችልም። ስለዚህ የሞናሊዛ ስዕል 'ነን-ፈንጀብል' ነው።

ስለዚህ 'ነን-ፈንጀብል' ቶክን ማለት በሌላ ሊተካ ወይም ሊቀየር የማይችል ነገር ማለት ነው።
