We all say we have good communication skills in interviews.

I believed I did too.

But I failed at communication. Let me tell you what happened, because it might help anyone working remotely or in a hybrid setup.

I've noticed there are usually two types of people at work.

The first person reports every little thing. They send updates constantly, call often, keep Slack active, and make sure the manager always knows what they're doing. They aren't always the hardest worker, but they're highly visible.

The second person just gets the work done. They think constant messages are annoying, so they only give updates once or twice a week or whenever there's meaningful progress.

The reality is that the first person often gets more recognition and honestly, that makes sense. If you're working remotely, your manager can't see you working. The only way they know what's happening is through your communication.

In my case, I had two managers, and I needed to keep both of them updated. That was the first challenge.

The second problem was that I saw one of my managers yell at other employees. After seeing that, I became defensive. I avoided communicating with him because I didn't want to end up in the same situation.(I know it is not gonna be good for both of us if he yell at me like that ) I only kept one manager updated and continued doing my work.

That created a communication gap.

Looking back, I learned something important

Doing the work is only half of the job. Communicating the work is the other half.
If your manager doesn't know what you're doing, they can't recognize your effort, remove blockers, or help you when you need it.

Communication isn't just talking it's making your work visible.

I hope someone can learn from my mistake.
