It’s just a chill space where I share my thoughts, things I’m learning, mistakes I make, and random dev moments.
I opened this to stay committed, grow, and learn with others.
If you vibe with that, grab your coffee and let’s figure out tech together ☕️💻

this platform is created by one of the earliest A2SVians who is now a senior software engineer at Google. it's called Habeshans corner. it's aim is sharing opportunities like jobs, scholarships, internships and mentorships in the habesha community around the world. it's just getting started, but it could go on to be something big. join the corner, share it with in your circle.

This month has been crazy busy for me. I’ve been dealing with new things at work, project deadlines, client work... honestly, it’s been chaotic, and I’ve been getting pretty close to burnout.

But in the middle of all that chaos, I still managed to work on a small side project over the last two weeks. It’s something I built to make my own life easier. I learned Electron just to create it, and I’m really excited about it. If nothing unexpected comes up, I’m planning to launch it tomorrow or the day after.

What I want to say is consistency and progress don't always look like showing up every single day.

Sometimes progress looks like struggling in private.

Sometimes it looks like learning lessons you can't explain yet.

And that's okay.

Keep going. Even when it feels messy, you're probably making more progress than you think.

Introducing ICare

I built ICare because I spend most of my day staring at a screen and kept forgetting to take breaks until my eyes started hurting.

ICare reminds you to follow the 20-20-20 rule by nudging you every 20 minutes to look away from your screen for 20 seconds. If you're really stubborn, Smart Eye Mode can block your screen for 20 seconds and force the break

To make things more fun, I added:
      - Analytics to track your habits
      - Streaks and badges to keep you motivated
      - Different popup personalities
      - A Savage Mode that might roast you for ignoring your eye health

I wanted ICare to be simple, useful, and a little entertaining.

I've been using it myself, and it's already helping me build healthier screen habits. I hope it helps you too.

If you try it out, I'd love to hear your feedback.

@CodeAndCoffee1 made iCare (eye-care) it's a digital health app to remind you to give your eyes a break. It's pretty thoughtful and idk any other that does this.

iCare
https://icare-showcase.vercel.app/

You set some screentime, and when the time is up it remind you to stop using your computer - you can take it to the extreme and it will disable your computer until the break is over.

It's got analytics, streaks and much more. Plus it's open-source - pretty cool.

A few things I learned while building ICare. It was my first time working with Electron

1. I was trying to make the break window stay on top of everything. I tried alwaysOnTop, but every time I clicked back into my code, the break window would go behind it. Then I tried Kiosk Mode... and it basically turned my screen into black At that point, I gave up. Lesson learned Linux window managers are stubborn lol.

2. Even Kiosk Mode can be bypassed pretty easily. Making something that truly blocks the user is way harder than I expected.

3. When I started building for the Snap Store, I got hit with error after error after error. Seriously, be prepared for endless build issues if you're packaging desktop apps for Linux

4. Electron is actually simple and easy to understand. If you've worked with JavaScript before, you'll pick it up pretty quickly. But if you're planning to build an app that needs deep interaction with the OS, I probably wouldn't choose Electron. Trying to control OS-level behavior using JavaScript is kinda impossible.

Idk if any of this will help anyone, but this was the chaos I went through while building ICare 😂

Yes, it definitely matters. When you’re consistent, the algorithm rewards you with more reach and engagement, but the moment you stop, even if you have a lot of followers, it doesn’t matter, it will forget who you even are lol. @natyiu0
I honestly think I'm pretty good at engaging on most social media platforms and making a good impression, but X is a different story

For some reason, I've never really liked it, and I still don't know why. But I guess it's time to give it a real shot

So for the next month, I'm going to try being consistent on X and actually take it seriously.
I have no idea what kind of content I'll end up posting yet but we'll figure that out together
