Chuseok

πŸ‡°πŸ‡·μΆ”μ„ β€” one of the two most important and favorite holidays in South Korea, similar to "Thanksgiving day".

πŸ“…In 2024, it falls on September 17, and on this day the whole country pays tribute to its ancestors, celebrating a generous harvest.

Families gather together to perform traditional rituals such as the charye (μ°¨λ‘€), a ceremony of worship for the ancestors' spirits πŸ™‡πŸ»β€β™‚οΈ

🍚Rice, 🍎fresh fruits, πŸ₯ rice bread or Songpyeon (μ†‘νŽΈ) with various fillings and traditional Korean wine Makkolli🍷 appear on the tables.

πŸͺ…Different festivals and parades are held in the major cities, inspired by the traditions of the holiday, which are particularly popular among young people and tourists.

🌱This year, there is a new trend - the "Green Chuseok". More and more Koreans are trying to reduce the use of disposable packaging and prefer local organic products!

β€οΈβ€πŸ©ΉMillions of Koreans travel from megalopolises, like Seoul and Incheon, to their home towns and villages to spend time with their families.

we came to an era where we think the ultimate objective of the life is to be happy, like the highest level we can reach in our life is happiness, the pursuit of happiness as the world calls. i believe the most depressed people are the ones who are trying to be happy

the following quote from nassim taleb’s book, β€œthe bed of procrusted”, also supports that idea: one of the most depressing conferences i attended was one on happiness, where all the attendees were remarkably unhappy

that is why instead of chasing an elusive state of happiness, we have to focus on pursuing meaningful goals that can bring a deep sense of satisfaction and accomplishment

Chuseok (part 2)

Today is the 4th day of the holidays, and I will be sharing what each gift represents in Chuseok.

β€οΈβ€πŸ©Ή It is common to give gifts to relatives, friends, colleagues and neighbors to express gratitude and respect.

πŸ› Wrapping is an important cultural aspect as well, so Koreans prefer using silk and other fabric.

🎁 Each gift has its own symbolic meaning:

β€’ 🍏 Fruits and agricultural products are symbols of abundance and wishes for good health.

β€’ 🍚 Rice and cereals symbolize nutrition and fertility, while πŸ₯© meat and 🍀 seafood express respect and concern for health.

β€’ 🫚 Ginseng and πŸ’Š health products, as well as 🍷 alcohol, are symbols of improved health and long life.

β€’ 🧴Gifts of household items such as shampoo and soap signify comfort and wishes for a happy life of well-being.

Demonstrative consumption is a reality.

Today, it's preferred to look successful than being that kind of person. Creating the illusion of achievement and appreciation drives millions of people around us. Possession of the new iphone 16 will not make anyone's social status higher. That's why numerous fake gurus, affirmations or courses of "successful success" took over the social media. It's not the case only in Korea or Uzbekistan, people have been encouraging everything that shines and it only gets worse.

Koreys madaniyatiga qisqacha ekskurs

Tanishing, bu Qirol Sejong. U 1418-1450 yillarda Choson (hozirgi Koreya) davlatini boshqargan. O'zimizda ham u davrda o'zbek tilidan ko'ra forsiy tilga afzallik berilgani singari, Chosonda ham aristokratlar xitoy tilida so'zlashgan. Sejong buyukligining sababi bu aholi uchun yagona til va alifboga asos solgani hisoblanadi. U boshchiligida "aqlli inson 1 kunda, nodon esa 2 kunda o'rgana oladigan" til 1443-yilda ommaga taqdim etildi. Bu alifbo "Hangil" (ν•œκΈ€) deb nom oldi, va har yili aynan 9-oktabr kuni bu kunni davlat bayrami sifatida nishonlab kelishadi.

πŸ“šFriend of mine, Abdurashid, graduate student at UChicago, has recently started a social project called "read and return books" in Tashkent. You can share unused books at home, or lend one for 2-3 weeks, so it's a win-win situation for everyone involved. Contribution to the project is voluntary, just contact Dilshoda (@hankersore) for any inquiries.

πŸ‡°πŸ‡·What do Koreans ask you when they meet for the first time? Age? Country? Occupation?

Hell, no. Your MBTI🫠

So, what is it? Basically, kinda horoscope but there are 16 types of personality according to 16personalities.com and once you take that test, it will show your strengths and weaknesses, etc. During the dating, job application or regular class at uni they can ask your MBTI and they give it such importance... Mine is ENFJ, let me know yours in the commentsπŸ’¬

"Korean" stress

Recently, we had research from one of the classes on the topic "Stress among high school students".

Before coming here, I used to think of stress as a joke, but, after living here for more than a year, I can surely say that I was wrong. Suicide is the main reason for deaths in Korea, and the stress from the very childhood till the work among Koreans is the main reason for it.

Competitive society pushes parents to pressure their children, enormous stress is put on students and workers too. We interviewed some university and high school students and received a few crucial points I wanted to share with you.

To be continued...
