🔴هانس پیتر لون از پژوهشگران IBM در مقاله‌ای در سال ۱۹۵۸، برای اولین بار از عبارت هوشمندی تجاری (business intelligence) استفاده نمود. او هوشمندی را این‌گونه تعریف نموده است: «توانایی درک روابط متقابل بین حقایق موجود به­ گونه ­ای که فعالیت­ها را به سمت هدف مطلوب هدایت کند.»

🔴هوشمندی تجاری طوری که امروزه مطرح می گردد، شکل تکامل ‌یافته‌ی سیستم ‌های اتخاذ تصمیم پشتیبان می باشد که استفاده از آنها از سال ۱۹۶۰ شروع گشته و تا اواسط ۱۹۸۰ ادامه داشته است.

🔴در سال ۱۹۸۹، هوارد درسنر که بعدها از تحلیلگران موسسه گارتنر گشت، هوشمندی تجاری را به عنوان عبارتی جهت «توصیف مفاهیم و راههایی برای بهبود تصمیم‌گیری‌های مربوط به کسب‌ و کار با استفاده از سیستم های پشتیبان مبتنی بر داده‌ها و واقعیت‌ها» استفاده کرد و از اواخر سال ۱۹۹۰ بود که این مفهوم بصورت گسترده مورد استفاده گذاشته شد.
