failover cluster
A failover cluster is a group of servers that work together to maintain high availability of applications and services. If one of the servers fails, another server in the cluster can take over the first server's workload without any downtime (this process is known as failover). Each server in the cluster is called a node. Use cases for failover clusters include file servers, print servers, database servers and messaging servers.
Failover clustering requires the servers to be aware of each other and exchange details on a regular basis. With Windows Server Failover Clustering, for example, each active server has another server identified as its standby server and the two servers communicate through a series of "heartbeat" signals over a dedicated network.
