You’ve probably heard that cleft sentences are considered advanced grammatical structures worth Band 8-9. And 'the reason why' cleft is one of them. But in this lesson, I want you to focus on one important point: your answer needs to sound natural above all else.

Be careful with this cleft sentence. It doesn’t fit every question. For example, if you’re answering a question like 'Do you prefer tea or coffee?' saying 'The reason why I like coffee is that...' will sound unnatural. For simple Part 1 questions like this, it's better to say, 'I love coffee because...' instead.

However, this cleft sentence works well for Part 3 answers. For example: 'The main reason why water resources are becoming scarce is that...'
