Iran forces Trump to make a choice, the price could be war
Tehran is betting that Trump does not want a large-scale war and will prefer to focus on preventing an Iranian nuclear weapon while accepting Iran's control of the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran's new leadership is pragmatic enough to pursue an agreement, but not to relinquish what it sees as a crucial source of leverage.
The situation could spiral beyond Iran's control, and Trump's, ending in escalation

My interview @cnni with @BeckyCNN regarding the latest escalation between the United States:
First, if President Trump is determined to secure freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz by force, he will eventually confront a fundamental reality: Iran is highly unlikely to relinquish control over the strait voluntarily. Any attempt to fundamentally alter the military balance would likely require operations against Iran's positions along its side of the strait , a far more demanding undertaking than punitive strikes or limited naval operations.
Second, the current exchange still appears to be operating within relatively limited boundaries. However, the longer the cycle of retaliation continues, the greater the risk of miscalculation and unintended escalation, even if neither Washington nor Tehran is actively seeking another large-scale war.
Third, President Trump's proposal that commercial shipping pay for U.S. protection in the Strait of Hormuz raises difficult questions. Washington has long criticized any attempt by Iran to impose costs or conditions on international navigation. Asking commercial vessels to pay for passage risks creating an uncomfortable contradiction with America's longstanding position in defense of freedom of navigation.
Fourth, the Houthi front may prove just as consequential as Hormuz itself. Reports that the Houthis have sought to expand their air bridge with Iran, followed by Saudi military action, increase the likelihood of Houthi retaliation. If that retaliation extends to disrupting traffic through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, the consequences for global energy markets could rival developments in Hormuz. Such a scenario would directly serve Iran's broader objective of increasing pressure on global energy supplies and raising oil prices.
Finally, Israel is unlikely to view the collapse of U.S.-Iran diplomacy negatively. At the same time, the current dynamics suggest that neither Washington nor Tehran has a strong interest in bringing Israel directly into the confrontation, since doing so would significantly increase the risk of a broader regional war.

The administration's actions in recent days are likely reinforcing a longstanding concern in Tehran: that negotiations with Washington may not produce durable or reliable outcomes.
If Iranian leaders conclude that diplomacy offers diminishing returns, they may become less willing to exercise the restraint they previously showed when there was still a realistic prospect of an agreement, in relation to the naval blockade.
That raises the central strategic question: What is the administration's desired end state? If Iran remains unwilling to compromise on what it views as its core interests in the Strait of Hormuz, what is the realistic objective of escalating military pressure? Is the goal to compel negotiations, restore deterrence, or fundamentally change Iran's behavior? Each of those objectives would require a different strategy.
Without a clearly defined political end state, there is a risk that continued escalation becomes an end in itself, one that increases tensions, raises global oil prices, and gradually pulls the United States into a broader regional confrontation without delivering a durable strategic outcome.

While Iran and the United States attack each other with missiles, drones and bombast, Iran could be pushing ahead with its nuclear project undetected, said Danny Citrinowicz, a retired Israeli military intelligence officer who specializes in Iran.
With International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors still barred from Iran, Israel is dependent on its intelligence services’ penetration of Iran for information about its intentions, he said, and “some days you have it, some days you don’t have it.”
Mr. Citrinowicz, sounding what appears to be a minority view among Israeli officialdom, said Israel’s best hope was an agreement that blocked any path for Iran toward a bomb.
“But this current government is not interested in that,” he said. “They’re interested in leaving Iran as a threat, and leaving the possibility of a return to war

Controlling Hormuz Would Take More U.S. Troops—and Even More Risk
As U.S. strikes on Iran continue, military experts say opening the strait would require months of effort.
Quoted @ynetnews:
The confrontation provides an interesting glimpse into the decision-making process in the regime’s new-old structure, in which the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps plays a dominant role and the supreme leader is not the final authority.
The leadership in Tehran does view Washington as the ‘great Satan’ that must be avenged for the killing of Khamenei the elder, and it is more willing than in the past to use force.
At the same time, it attaches great importance to negotiations, which serve its interests well. Tehran is demonstrating rigidity and is willing to take the heavy risk of escalation and a prolonged confrontation, but its goal is to return to negotiations under improved conditions from its
perspective.

The latest developments are placing enormous pressure on Pakistan. Nearly one-fifth of Pakistan's population is Shi'a, and many viewed Ali Khamenei as their supreme religious leader, as reflected in the protests outside the U.S. Consulate in Karachi following his assassination.
The last thing Islamabad wants is to be drawn into a regional war if Saudi Arabia invokes its defense arrangements and becomes directly involved in military operations against Iran and/or the Houthis.
Saudi Arabia's renewed alignment with the United States, underscored by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's recent conversation with President Trump, which reportedly included discussions about Saudi policy toward the Houthis and broader coordination with Washington on Iran, inevitably places the Kingdom higher on Tehran's target list.
This shift also brings Iran and the Houthis closer together. One of the main reasons the Houthis had previously shown restraint was their growing economic dependence with Saudi Arabia and their interest in preserving the roadmap agreed with Riyadh.
If that political framework begins to unravel, the likelihood of renewed Houthi attacks against Saudi Arabia rises significantly, along with a greater willingness to confront Riyadh directly. The recent seizure of a commercial vessel and the growing threat to shipping in the Bab al-Mandab Strait should be viewed in this broader strategic context.
For Pakistan, this is a deeply troubling scenario. Islamabad is increasingly concerned that Saudi Arabia could soon face a coordinated Iranian-Houthi campaign, potentially including intensified attacks on Saudi territory and renewed efforts to disrupt maritime traffic through the Bab al-Mandab Strait. Such a development would create difficult strategic choices for Pakistan, which seeks to preserve its ties with Saudi Arabia while avoiding direct involvement in a broader regional conflict.

Mojtaba Khamenei's latest statement underscores a fundamental problem with the current U.S. approach. While the administration appears to believe that additional military pressure could eventually bring Iran back to the negotiating table in a weaker position, Tehran's leadership may be drawing the opposite conclusion.
The message from Tehran suggests that key decision-makers increasingly see little strategic value in returning to an agreement with the United States.
If that assessment takes hold, President Trump may eventually seek to pause the escalation and revive diplomacy, only to discover that there is no willing partner on the other side. That would leave both sides facing a far more dangerous and difficult strategic environment.

My interview @cnni
@PoloSandovalCNN:
The real question is not what the administration is trying to achieve militarily. That part is relatively clear: Washington is attempting to weaken Iran's ability to control the Strait of Hormuz, and strikes on Bandar Abbas and related military infrastructure contribute to that objective. The tactical gains should not be dismissed. The real uncertainty lies in their strategic value.
Iran still retains multiple escalation options. It can intensify attacks against Gulf states, target undersea communications cables that pass through the region, strike critical civilian infrastructure, and encourage the Houthis to expand operations against Gulf shipping and energy assets. In other words, if Washington raises the stakes, Tehran still has several ways to respond.
Any realistic strategy should begin with one core assumption: Iran is unlikely to capitulate. If that assumption is correct, the United States will eventually face a strategic choice. It can continue escalating in pursuit of objectives that may require a much larger military commitment, or it can accept a negotiated outcome that reflects at least some of Tehran's terms.
The broader strategic question therefore remains unanswered: How does the administration envision this ending? Thirty-nine days of military operations did not force Iran to surrender or fundamentally alter its decision-making. There is little evidence that a limited extension of the current campaign would produce a different result. Before expanding the conflict further, Washington needs to define a realistic political end state rather than relying on military pressure alone.
