Mavzu: Present simple (questions) - Oddiy hozirgi zamonning so’roq shakli

Oddiy hozirgi zamondagi gapni savolga aylantirish uchun gapning boshiga "Do / Does" so'zlaridan birini qo'shamiz:
• I work - Men ishlayman.
Do I work? - Men ishlaymanmi?

What, Where, How kabi so'roq so'zlar gapning boshida keladi, keyin "do/does", keyin qolgan so'zlar keladi. Ba'zan often (tez-tez), never (hech qachon), sometimes (ba'zida), usually (odatda), always (doim) kabi so'zlar ham "do/does"dan oldin kelishi mumkin.

• What do you do? - Nima ish qilasiz?
Bundagi birinchi "do" oddiy hozirgi zamonni bildiruvchi so'z, ikkinchi "do" - qilmoq ma'nosidagi mustaqil so'z bo'lib kelyapdi.

Savol berayotganda 3-shaxs birlikda (he/she/it) "does" ishlatiladi.
• Does he live in Uzbekistan? - U O'zbekistonda yashaydimi?

Savollarga qisqa javoblar berish mumkin:
O'zingiz haqingizda - Yes, I do yoki No, I don't.
2-shaxsda - Yes, you do yoki No, you don't.
3-shaxs birlikda erkak bo'lsa - Yes, he does yoki No, he doesn't.
3-shaxs birlikda ayol bo'lsa - Yes, she does yoki No, she doesn't.
3-shaxs birlikda jinsi noma'lum yoki odam bo'lmasa - Yes, it does yoki No, it doesn't.
3-shaxs ko'plikda - Yes, they do yoki No, they don't.
Hammasi "ha" yoki "yo'q" degan ma'noda ishlatiladi.

IELTS Listening: capital letters and plurals 🎧📚

Here are two common questions about the IELTS listening test:

Is it acceptable to use lower case instead of upper case e.g. "central station" when the answer is "Central Station"?

Will you lose marks if you miss the "s" when the answer should be plural?

Here are my answers:

Using lower case is fine, so "central station" would be correct. You can even write everything in capital letters if you want.

Missing the "s" is sometimes acceptable and sometimes not. It's not acceptable when the grammar requires a plural e.g. "the journey takes three hour" would be wrong. Some answers can be singular or plural. Check the context of the question and the sentence grammar carefully.

☘️ Discuss both views

Q: Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.
Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

💡 Answer:

Our world is facing a wide variety of environmental challenges nowadays. These range from pollution of the atmosphere and the associated global warming phenomenon to the depletion of natural resources. While some argue that biodiversity decline is the most pressing environmental issue, I believe other environmental problems are more critical and urgent.

On the one hand, the extinction of some species of flora and fauna is a serious and alarming issue. Every day we hear that more and more species of plants and animals are on the edge of disappearing because of global warming and human encroachment. The most obvious victim is coral which is at risk of extinction because the ocean water has grown more and more acidic as a result of all the carbon dioxide it has absorbed. Eventually, the loss of biodiversity will pose a significant threat to mankind, including the a reduction in the quality and amount of food resources, clean water, and breathable air.

On the other hand, it cannot be denied that the global environment is facing more serious problems. Firstly, rising seas and extreme weather events, due to climate change, are having devastating consequences in many regions around the world. In the vast majority of developing countries, people depend heavily on the natural environment but are now facing more frequent and longer droughts, forest fires and desertification. Similarly, air pollution is considered a significant environmental issue with serious effects on people’s health. Humans are suffering from a wide range of respiratory diseases from being exposed to contaminated air. In addition, global warming and pollution of the biosphere are expected to compound other environmental problems, including the extinction of many kinds of species.

In conclusion, the loss of biodiversity is not the most critical environmental issue we face. Others, including climate change and air pollution, are more urgent due to their devastating effects.

☘️ Agree / Disagree

Q: Governments spend millions of dollars each year in their space programmes. Most recently, Mars is the focus of scientists’ attention. Some people think this money would be better spent on dealing with problems closer to home. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

💡 Answer:

There is always going to be a debate over the amount of money spent on space exploration. Scientific studies of Mars and planets may provide information that is useful on earth. However, some people believe this cannot justify the huge amounts of money spent on space research when there is a greater need for it here.

In the past, different countries used space exploration to compete with each other. For example, the US and the USSR raced each other to see who could put a man on earth first. It would have been much easier and cheaper if they had pooled resources and information, and made a joint expedition into space. Fortunately, nowadays this is happening more and more, and thus less money is being wasted.

Nevertheless, some critics believe that all money given to space exploration is wasted. They argue that if millions of dollars spent on space research were put into health and education programmes around the world, many lives would be significantly improved. It is certainly likely that if this money were invested in crop development in different parts of the world, we could save many lives in countries where people do not have enough food. It is very difficult to argue against these criticisms.

In my opinion, we need a balance between how much money is spent on space exploration and how much money is invested into solving problems here on earth. With continued co-operation between nations over space travel, more will be achieved for less money. This should leave more money to be spent on problems at home.
