Write Slightly Over the Word Limit

Did you know that IELTS examiners count every word of your writing test? It’s a very boring job but they still do it. 🧐

For task 1 you have to write at least 150 words and for task 2 at least 250 words. That means if you write 149 words for task 1 you will lose marks. It is therefore essential that you write over the word limit.

You will not have time to count every word, so the best thing you can do is practice using the official answer sheets and you will then know what 150 words and 250 words looks like on the page without having to count every word.☝️

Lots of students also ask if it is better to write over the word limit. The answer is no because you don’t have time and writing more than is required often leads to more grammar mistakes and your ideas becoming irrelevant. Try to write about 10-15% over what is required. This way you will always go over the word limit, but not lose time or make mistakes.

🔰KOALAS

Koalas live in the topmost branches of Eucalyptus trees and eat the leaves and shoots and can consumes over Ikg of foliage a day . They are well suited to life in the trees and , unlike other arboreal marsupials such as the tree kangaroo , the koala does not have an external tail . However vestiges of a tail are still present in the skeletal structure of the Koala , indicating that at some time in its evolutionary history an external tail was present . Despite having no tail , the Koala has an excellent sense of balance . With a lean , muscular body , and comparatively long , strong limbs , the Koala can support its weight when climbing . The front and hind limbs are nearly equal in length and much of the Koala's climbing strength comes from the thigh muscle , which joins the shin much lower than in many other mammals . The Koala's paws are specially adapted for gripping and climbing . Rough pads on the palms and soles help it to grip tree trunks and branches , and both front and hind paws have long sharp claws . Each paw has five digits ; on the front paw , two digits are opposed to the other three - rather like a human's thumb - so they are both able to be moved in opposition to the other three . This allows the Koala to grip more securely . Distinctive parallel Koala scratch marks on tree trunks are due to this particular characteristic .

🔹Answer the questions by using NO MORE THAN THREE words from the text for each answer .

1. What is missing from a koala which is present in other similar animals ?
2. Which part of the koala provides the majority of the power for climbing ?
3. As well rough pads on the paws , which other body part helps the koala to grip ?

💡Idiom:
"Take a back seat"

🧐Meaning:
If you take a back seat, you choose not to be in a position of responsibility or power

Example:
After being in the leadership position for more than a decade, it’ll be tough for him to take a back seat.

☘️ Agree/Disagree

Q: Foreign visitors should pay more than local visitors for cultural and historical attractions. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

💡 Answer:

It is sometimes argued that tourists from foreign countries should pay more than local residents to visit important sites and monuments. However, I would argue that foreign and local visitors should be charged equally.

To start with, foreign tourists make a significant contribution to the economy of the host country by spending their money on a wide range of goods and services such as food, souvenirs, accommodation and travel, so there is no reason for making them pay more. In fact, if foreigners realised that they would have to pay more to visit historical and cultural attractions in a particular nation, they would perhaps decide not to go to that country on holidays. Consequently, there would be a decline in the number of tourists and the country could risk losing money they can earn from overseas visitors for the maintenance of these important buildings and sites. For instance, many Westerners have complained about being overcharged to visit local attractions in Vietnam and they have blogged to warn others against travelling to the country, leading to a reduced number of visitors to Vietnam in recent years.

However, some people argue that cultural and historical sites and monuments often depend on state subsidies for upkeep and maintenance, which means that the local population already pays money to these sites through the tax system. As a result, they point out that locals should be charged less than foreign tourists to visit and enjoy those sites. I disagree with that, though, and believe that the only way for a country to attract more overseas visitors is to keep the admission fees for foreigners the same as those for local residents, thereby safeguarding the income earned from the tourism industry.

In conclusion, I believe it is better to charge local people and foreign visitors equally when it comes to visiting cultural and historical places.
