Present Simple Rules

When daily routines come into play,
The present simple leads the way.
For habits, truths, or scheduled time,
Use these rules to keep it prime.

For Singular: With "I," "you," "we," or "they,"
Just add an "s" for "he" or "she" each day.
He plays the guitar, soft and sweet,
She works on her novel, neat.

For Negatives: "Do not" or "does not" you use,
To show what’s not done, what you refuse.
I do not eat before the noon,
She does not sing a morning tune.

In Questions: Invert the do with the subject, dear,
To ask if something’s clear.
Do you walk each day at dawn?
Does he swim before the morn?

With Frequency: Adverbs help you show,
How often actions go.
Always, often, never, too,
He usually reads before he’s through.

For Facts and Truths: Timeless and precise,
Present simple keeps it nice.
Water boils at one hundred’s mark,
The Earth orbits ‘round the Sun’s bright arc.

Present Continuous Rules

When actions are happening right now,
The present continuous shows you how.
For things in progress, here and now,
Follow these rules, I’ll show you how.

Forming the Tense: With "am," "is," or "are" you start,
Add the verb with “-ing” to play your part.
I am writing this line,
She is dancing so fine.

For Negatives: "Not" comes after the verb,
To show what’s not happening, to disturb.
I am not eating just yet,
He is not sleeping, you bet.

In Questions: Flip the "am," "is," or "are,"
With the subject near, and you're not far.
Are you watching the show?
Is she learning to sew?

With Actions in Progress: For what’s ongoing, don’t delay,
Describe the now with “-ing” each day.
They are building a new home,
We are exploring places unknown.

For Temporary Situations: Use it to show the short-term,
For actions that aren’t fixed, that’s the norm.
I am staying with friends for a week,
He is studying hard, no time to speak.

So when you need to show what’s in stride,
The present continuous will be your guide.

Past Simple Rules

Yesterday I played and danced,
Actions done at first glance.
Add -ed to regular verbs,
It’s that simple, no big swerves.

But beware of the ones that change,
Go turns went, now isn’t that strange?
See becomes saw, catch turns to caught,
Irregular verbs can't be taught—they’re bought!

Use it for actions already done,
Finished moments, work, or fun.
Questions need did, like Did you play?,
Negative is didn't, simple that way.

So use the past to tell your tale,
A story lived, it won’t derail.

Past Continuous Rules

I was walking, she was talking,
Past continuous keeps things rocking.
It’s was or were plus -ing,
For actions that were happening.

Use it for the past in flow,
Like "I was reading," don’t you know?
Describe the scene, set the stage,
Tell what happened on that page.

While one thing’s done, the other’s in play,
“I was sleeping when the phone rang away.”
Past continuous sets the vibe,
Of actions live and still alive.

Questions use was and were,
“Were you studying?” Yes, for sure!
Negatives use not in line,
“I wasn’t running,” and that’s just fine.
