37 Die in NSCDC Custody in Niger State

Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has confirmed that 37 persons died in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

The NSCDC says “scores” of suspected illegal miners arrested during a “bust operation” in M.I. Wushishi and Lukoto villages in Niger State have died in its custody. Video via TG👇

According to a statement issued on Thursday by the NSCDC Commandant in Niger State, Suberu Aniviye, the suspects were arrested during operations conducted on September 15 and 16.

Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has confirmed that 37 persons died in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

According to a statement issued on Thursday by the NSCDC Commandant in Niger State, Suberu Aniviye, the suspects were arrested during operations conducted on September 15 and 16.

Aniviye said “scores of the detained suspects were found dead in the early hours of Thursday following a suspected outbreak of disease.”

However, The Nation quoted the commandant as saying that 33 suspects died in custody.

A suspected NDLEA officer has reportedly drowned while pursuing a suspected drug offender into the Ethiope River at Obiaruku, Ukwuani Local Government Area of Delta State, on Saturday.

According to Vanguard News, the yet-to-be-identified officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) drowned during an operation to apprehend suspected drug offenders.

According to information accompanying the video, one of the suspects, who was allegedly being taken towards the Ethiope River Bridge, jumped into the river in an attempt to escape.

The officers reportedly followed the suspect into the river in an effort to apprehend him. While one officer was rescued and taken to a hospital for medical attention, another reportedly drowned.

The suspected offenders were also said to have escaped through the river.

The body of the officer who reportedly drowned was later recovered from the river.

Community sources said traditional rites associated with drowning incidents in the area were performed before the remains were released to the relevant authorities.
