Huijsen has a £50 million release clause in his contract that is expected to become active at the end of this season. Chelsea are currently leading the race to sign him.

Other big clubs like Liverpool and Real Madrid are also interested, but Chelsea have been watching him closely since before January and are ready to pay the release clause.

Chelsea’s long-term interest and plans for the 20-year-old could make the move appealing to him, even if they don’t qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Chelsea also have a good relationship with Huijsen’s agents, and they successfully worked with Bournemouth last summer on a deal for goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Chelsea are also considering other defenders, including Jorrel Hato from Ajax, Jarrad Branthwaite from Everton, and Marc Guehi.

Barat helped arrange the deal that sent Caicedo to Chelsea.

Over the last year, Barat has worked on several other deals with the Blues, including: Nicolas Jackson’s new contract, Ian Maatsen’s move to Aston Villa, Conor Gallagher’s switch to Atletico Madrid, and Cesare Casadei's transfer to Torino.

Romeo Lavia is likely to play his first minutes for Chelsea since March 16 in this Saturday’s game against Everton, probably coming off the bench.

Chelsea are being careful with him because he’s had more injury problems than anyone would have wanted. The good news is he trained fully on Wednesday at Cobham without any problems.
