i call these doodles or sketches because i don't really have a strict plan for where they could be going, so i can feel free to skip the "foundation stage" and jump right into drawing lines and have fun playing with forms. like i just noticed that in the speedpaint above i didn't even position the figure?? or the head??? the hardest part was the animal he was carrying so i drew that first and everything else just followed along and positioned itself around that. it's teaching me how i work around which is nice?

for more serious drawings when i have a goal in mind i make sure i carefully lay down a ghost or glimpse of every subject's 3D forms down on paper so they don't clip into each other or fall out of proportion in the later stages. if we're completely serious for an illustration i have to try different angles, compositions, scenarios etc by doing quick thumbnails, then gather around references for everything, make a list of all things i have to avoid, sacrifice a limb, solve global warming, etc.
personally each of these stages usually take at least an hour on the good days and with subjects that i know by heart, but I've been stuck and absolutely destroyed over just coming up with a proper composition for weeks too 🐟🐟🐟
